ANDROPAUSE |
|
|
|
Andropause plays an
essential role in
maintaining libido. |
|
|
Yes, men go through
a type of menopause
too... |
|
Andropause is
caused by decreasing
testosterone levels in the
male population as they age.
This decrease usually begins
after the age of 40.
Testosterone, which is an
androgen hormone, is
produced in the testis and
adrenals and is equivalent
to estrogen in women. Among
its many effects,
testosterone increases
muscle mass, is involved in
our physiological stress
response, and plays an
essential role in
maintaining libido. |
|
Research also
suggests that testosterone
may play a role in
cardiovascular health, as
well as mental functioning,
such as memory, attention
and spatial ability. |

Testosterone
levels vary considerably
among men, as do the
severity of symptoms
associated with its
decrease. Due to this
variance, diagnosis of
Andropause is difficult to
make without a baseline
measurement. Men at the age
of 40 may wish to have their
serum/blood testosterone
levels tested to establish a
baseline, making a decrease
more recognizable. Signs and
symptoms of deficiency must
also be present in order to
confirm a diagnosis of
Andropause. Many men may
notice a decrease in libido
or difficulty maintaining
erection. Other common
symptoms are fatigue,
insomnia, irritability,
impaired concentration and
memory, and possibly hot
flashes or excessive
sweating. Research is now
showing a strong correlation
between osteoporosis risk
and decreased testosterone. |
|
In certain
populations early Andropause
may occur. Conditions such
as Diabetes, and
Cardiovascular disease are
among these populations.
Males who experience
excessive female hormone
stimulation through
workplace exposure to
estrogen are also at risk.
Men who work in the
pharmaceutical industry,
plastics factories, near
incinerators, and on farms
that use pesticides, should
be aware of the risk for
early Andropause.
At the risk of sounding like
a broken record, diet and
exercise are essential in
maintaining adequate
testosterone levels. Excess
weight increases sex hormone
binding globulin, which as
the name implies, binds to
and removes testosterone
from the blood. Body fat
also contains an enzyme
which converts testosterone
to estrogen. As a rule, the
more estrogen we have, the
less testosterone.
Therefore, you want to
decrease serum estrogen as
much as possible. Weight
loss of as little as 10 lbs
can make a significant
difference in this hormone
balance within the body.
Fiber binds excess estrogen
and aids in its elimination.
Eating a diet high in fiber,
including fruits and
vegetables is recommended.
