Organic Chocolate
Who doesn't like a good chocolate bar treat once in a while? Indeed, our love affair with chocolate stretches back more than five millennia and originates from the rainforests of Central and South America, where it was long considered the "food of the gods." Chocolate also played an essential political, spiritual and economic role in ancient Mesoamerica, present-day Mexico. Today, most conventionally available chocolate bars are highly-refined, mass-produced and contain little actual cacao. Some natural brands; however, make their chocolate bars by hand and pay close attention to the purity of all of their ingredients, most notably by using only those that are grown organic and, ideally, fair-trade certified.
Chocolate is produced from the tropical Theobroma cacao tree's pods (or fruit). Raw (unroasted) and less processed cacao beans are incredibly nutritious and have impressive medicinal properties. On the other hand, roasted cacao beans lose much of their medicinal properties but retain their characteristic flavour. Roasted cacao beans are what are typically used in commercial chocolate bars. Whether raw or roasted, the darker a chocolate bar is the higher the cacao and mineral content.

Organic Chocolate Varieties
Organic chocolate bars are available in health food stores and online from your favourite supplement/natural product retailer. They also come in different sizes and countless yummy flavours from natural sources. Some varieties have added functional ingredients such as: ashwagandha, L-theanine, GABA, passionflower, medicinal mushrooms, maca, Vitamin D, Ginkgo biloba, acetyl-carnitine, and many others.
While slightly more expensive than conventional chocolate bars, the organic variety packs quite a nutritional wallop and offers deep, rich, and intense flavour. Because of this, most people feel they can satisfy their sweet tooth with less.
Final Thoughts
Nothing beats organic when it comes to the flavour, fullness, mouth-feel, and quality of chocolate bars! Another benefit of organic chocolate bars is that not only does an organic certification prohibit the use of GMO ingredients, but it also bans the use of: artificial ingredients, sweeteners, colours, flavours, and preservatives (like hydrogenated fats, high fructose corn syrup, wax, and many, many others). So, an organic chocolate bar is a far healthier option and provides an infinitely more satisfying experience for your palate. Look for a chocolate bar made from RAW cacao to reap even further health benefits from your healthy snack.
