Phenylalanine Supplements

Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid (because the body cannot produce sufficient quantities) that is required for normal protein synthesis. It is converted to tyrosine in the body. It is a precursor to the neurotransmitters dopamine, norepinephrine (noradrenaline), and epinephrine (adrenaline), as well as thyroid hormones and melanin (a naturally occurring pigment in the skin that gives it colour).

As such, phenylalanine is vital to health and plays an integral role in learning, memory, and emotion, and, generally, maintaining normal growth and development throughout life. It is naturally present in most protein-containing foods, including meat, fish, poultry, eggs, nuts, seeds, and legumes. It’s also found in the artificial sweetener aspartame (made up of aspartic acid and phenylalanine), which is commonly added to diet sodas, gums, and sugar-free snacks. Aspartame use is associated with obesity, glucose and insulin intolerance, changes in the microbiota of offspring, premature birth, allergic reactions, and weight gain in newborns.

Research also shows that phenylalanine supplementation can help treat several conditions, including anxiety, depression, major depressive disorder, Parkinson’s disease, and various chronic pain disorders, including arthritis, migraines, and delayed muscle onset (DMO).

These supplements can also be effectively used to help improve skin pigmentation in those with vitiligo, a skin condition that causes loss of skin pigment. And there is very promising data that suggests phenylalanine (alongside 5-HTP and L-glutamine) may be a safe and effective way to help mitigate alcohol withdrawal symptoms in those suffering from AUD (Alcohol Use Disorder). Another exciting use of this amino is it's support of ADHD.

Phenylalanine Supplements

Phenylalanine exists in two forms: L-phenylalanine and D-phenylalanine, which are almost identical but differ slightly in their molecular structure. D- and L-forms of phenylalanine are commonly sold as DLPA.

The D, DL, and L forms of phenylalanine are commonly sold in capsule form.

They should ideally be taken on an empty stomach, about an hour before eating, to maximize absorption. 1,000–1,500 mg daily, in divided doses, is what is typically recommended.

Final Thoughts

It’s important to know that some people have issues with phenylalanine metabolism (a condition called phenylketonuria (PKU)) and may be unable to break it down efficiently. For these individuals, supplementation in even minimal amounts can cause serious side effects, ranging from seizures to developmental delays. However, the amount found naturally in foods doesn’t typically pose a risk for healthy individuals.
