Organic Flax Seed (Milled)
What makes flax stand out above other whole grains is its mix of fiber. Rather than containing large amounts of one type of fiber, flax seeds contain generous quantities of both soluble and insoluble fiber. Flax tastes good and adds all the fiber of whole grains to foods: 1 Tbsp of milled flax contains as much total dietary fiber as 1 slice of whole wheat bread or 1/4 cup of cooked oat bran.
Soluble fiber - Most of the soluble fiber in flax seeds is mucilage, a thick, sticky substance. Few studies have looked at the direct effects of mucilage on health. However, since it is well known that soluble fibers fruit pectin, oat bran or mustard seed mucilage are effective cholesterol-lowering agents, it's likely that the soluble fiber in flax seeds is no exception.
Insoluble fiber - Not surprisingly, studies show that the insoluble fiber in flax, like that in wheat bran, is helpful for regulating bowel movements and preventing constipation. Because flax's insoluble fiber components have the capacity to hold water, they help soften the stool and allow it to move through the colon more quickly.
Lignans - When bacteria in the digestive tract act on plant lignans these compounds are converted into potent hormone-like substances. Research on animals suggest these substances may have powerful positive effects on our day to day health. Flax is also one of the richest sources of lignans in the plant kingdom. Researchers are particularly interested in the cell growth-fighting ability of lignans.
Although about 41 per cent of flax is oil, very little of that is saturated. More than 70 per cent of fat in flax is of the healthful polyunsaturated type. In fact, a unique feature of flax is the high ratio of alpha-linolenic acid (an omega-3 fatty acid) to linoleic (omega-6 fatty acids).
Nutritionists consider these two polyunsaturated fatty acids as essential because the body cannot manufacture them from any other substances. (Normally, the body converts carbohydrates, proteins and fats into fatty acids as needed.) That means they must be eaten as part of the diet.
Cholesterol can be reduced by adding flax to the diet. New research also suggests that ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) offers protective effects against both coronary heart disease and stroke. Omega-3s have been shown to also protect against hypertension, and inflammatory and autoimmune disorders. Long-term studies of flax effects on breast cell growths are now underway.
Gold Top Organics Cold Pressing
Gold Top Organics is proud of its Organic Status. We work diligently to ensure that all our products are of the highest quality possible. To ensure this, every product produced at Gold Top Organics is monitored through every process from the seeding of the grain to the final packaging of the finished item.
Each farmer that grows for Gold Top Organics is certified as an organic farming operation. They take the grain to be used as seed stock and send it for testing to ensure that it is G.M.O. (genetically modified organism) free. The grain is grown in compliance with organic regulations, i.e. no artificial pesticides or fertilizers can be used or be residual in the soil. When harvested, the seeds are taken in a certified clean transport to a local, certified organic, seed cleaning plant. The seed is again tested, to ensure there has been no G.M.O. cross-contamination. From the seed cleaner, the seed is transported in certified clean, sealed trucks to our facility, where it is blown into sealed bins for storage until processing.
As an organic manufacturer, Gold Top Organics is monitored and audited to ensure we comply with all organic regulations, from logging the arrival of the raw materials, to the processes used in the plant, to the types of packaging and sanitation procedures we employ. We are required to demonstrate that we can trace any product at any point in manufacture, both forward to the finished product and in reverse to the farmer's field. These procedures ensure that our customers are guaranteed the finest quality product available.
Our oils are unrefined and cold pressed at body temperature to preserve the integrity of the nutritional structure of the extra virgin oil. They are bottled in dark bottles in a cool atmosphere where oxygen is eliminated from the bottle; this preserves the freshness and taste of the oils until opened by our customers. Enjoy in good health.
Flax Seed
Flaxseeds are a rich source of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an omega 3 essential fatty acid. "Essential" means that the body does not produce the fatty acids on its own and therefore they must be taken in through the diet. Most North American and Western diets are very low in Omega-3 and extremely high in Omega-6.
Too many saturated fats are consumed and the ratio of ingested EFA's averages more like 20:1 Omega-6's to Omega-3's instead of the recommended 4:1.
The ALA in flaxseed oil helps maintain cholesterol levels because healthy fats build HDL cholesterol. HDL cholesterol is responsible for moving fat, from storage or plaques, into the liver where processing and excretion of fat occurs. By decreasing fatty buildup on arteries it helps to regulate blood pressure. It also provides valuable support for immune system function because many immune cells use omega 3 fats in their cell membrane. Having a properly functioning membrane allows the cells to do things like release packets of chemicals when they come in contact with foreign invaders. Since healthy fats play a large role in hormone formation, ALA can thus help optimize hormone levels and strengthen male fertility. Studies show that ALA is an anti-inflammatory compound that is beneficial for the treatment of arthritis.
Ensure your flaxseed oil is cold-pressed because heat damages the acids and creates free radicals. Some of the damaged fats turn into trans-fatty acids, which are well known for their promotion of cardiovascular disease. Refrigerate all liquid flaxseed oil supplements and keep capsules away from heat because they can become rancid. Using flaxseed oil is much more cost effective than capsules because numerous capsules must be taken to make an equivalent amount of liquid oil. Do not use flaxseed oil for cooking or frying.
Ground flaxseeds are also used as a nutritional supplement. They contain some EFAs along with fiber, magnesium and potassium. Golden flaxseed contains more fatty acids than the same amount of brown flaxseed.
