Anxiety & Nervousness
Anxiety evolved as a coping mechanism to alert us to danger and allow us to act quickly and efficiently. It becomes maladaptive when it restricts our activities or causes our body to be in a constant state of fear. In most cases, anxiety is due to thoughts or emotions. The situation that brings on anxiety is individual but our body reacts to the perceived threat the same way it would if there was an actual threat. In other cases, substances like caffeine, nicotine, toxins or lack of sleep can contribute to anxiety. Medical conditions such as hypoglycemia, hyperthyroidism, strokes, mitral valve prolapse, iron deficiency anemia or adrenal tumors cause the nervous system to respond with anxiety symptoms. Anxiety causes physical stress on the body. The autonomic nervous system is activated resulting in a sense of uneasiness, sweating and trembling or outright anxiety attacks. Attacks can include diarrhea, heart palpitations, memory blocks and inappropriate behavior.

Helpful Herbs for Anxiety & Sleeplessness

Chamomile
Chamomile is a well-known herb amongst the general population. Its mild, pleasant taste makes it a favorite tea for soothing the digestion and nerves. Chamomile is a sedative, anti-inflammatory and spasmolytic agent that is used for arthritis, insomnia, anxiety, muscle spasms, digestive upsets, diarrhea, headaches and pain.

Passion Flower
Passion flower is a vine that is found along the roadside in many North American locations. It has been used traditionally as a sedative, reducing hyperactivity and anxiety. Passion flower's chemical components, maltol and ethylmaltol relax areas of the brain and reduce muscle tension. They bind to the same receptors that are used by sedative medications. Passion flower can be used for stress, anxiety, insomnia, hyperactivity and nervousness.

Oat Straw
Especially useful for the nervous system, Oat Straw helps to alleviate depression and stress. It is recommended by natural health practitioners for insomnia, depression, anxiety, restlessness. Dried oat straw is commonly made into a tea. It can also be purchased in capsules or as a tincture. Oat straw may be found in formulas for relaxing the mind and body and aiding sleep. It works well in combination with other relaxing herbs.

Valerian
Valerian has been used traditionally for many years as a sedative and alleviator of anxiety. It has many benefits over the use of pharmaceutical sedatives and sleep aids. Valerian does not alter the brain waves that occur as a part of normal sleep patterns. Therefore the sleep that you get after taking valerian is just as restful as normal sleep. Valerian does not give you a "hangover" the morning after you use it. Valerian's chemical components, the valepotriates, valerianic acids and pungent oils, relax the central nervous system by binding to the same receptors that are used by sedative medications.
