The vital role of Calcium
Inside the body, calcium performs a number of vital functions, the most important of which includes the following:
• forms the framework of teeth and bones
• helps to prevent osteoporosis
• maintains cell membranes
• regulates muscle contractions
Calcium and Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a silent, debilitating disease that progresses without symptoms until the bones become so frail that a sudden strain, sprain, or fall causes a fracture. The hip, wrist, ankle, and spine are common sites for osteoporotic bone fractures. The incidence of osteoporosis is increasing as the population ages. Currently, one in four women and one in eight men over the age of 50, have osteoporosis to some degree.
Why does bone density become diminished as we age?
Let’s take a closer look at the bone matrix to help us understand the seriousness of osteoporosis. Bone is living tissue that constantly renews itself. Although bone is strong and relatively flexible, everyday wear and tear causes tiny structural defects. In our bodies, two groups of specialized cells perform the work of a "maintenance crew." Osteoclasts excavate any areas of weakened bone, and then osteoblasts fill in the crevices with material that calcifies, to form new bone. As we age, the two groups of cells that form the "maintenance crew" become less efficient in working together — osteoclasts remove old bone faster than the osteoblasts are able to rebuild it, thus resulting in bone loss. Women can experience bone loss of up to 3% per year from areas such as the spine, and about 1% per year from peripheral areas such as the arm or hip.
So what can be done to prevent advanced bone loss?
Although researchers have firmly established that adequate amounts of calcium are needed to protect bone health, there is much confusion regarding the best form and ideal amount of this mineral, that should be taken.
How much Calcium do I need?
When choosing your calcium supplement, remember to make sure that you are checking for ELEMENTAL calcium content, which may be different from the absolute calcium content. Secondly, consider its bioavailability (absorbability) regarding (1) phosphorus content, (2) cofactors necessary for assimilation, and (3) liquid or tablet form. Adults under the age of 50 years normally require 1,000 mg of elemental calcium per day, and those over 50 normally require up to 1,500 mg.
A Superior Calcium-Magnesium Supplement from Inno-Vite
This formulation contains calcium and magnesium liquid in softgels with phosphorus, vitamin D3, vitamin C, and zinc in a base of omega-6 essential fatty acids.
There are three reasons for its enhanced availability to the body:
1. Unlike many other calcium supplements, INNO-CALMAG Complex contains not just one, but 3 forms of calcium including calcium citrate, calcium carbonate, and the most user-friendly form of all—calcium phosphate—the same calcium from which the bones themselves are made. In fact, phosphorus comprises close to one-third of the bone mass. The Mayo Clinic recently issued a statement indicating that phosphorus, in the form of calcium phosphate, is an important form of calcium for supporting bone development and maintenance. A recent study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, revealed that increased calcium intake without a corresponding increase in the amount of phosphorus causes a reduction in the absorption of phosphorus. This may potentially lead to diminished bone mass. Taking a calcium supplement without adequate phosphorus may, therefore, result in a reduction of bone mass, rather than have the desired increase.
2. INNO-CAL-MAG Complex contains essential cofactors in the correctly balanced ratios required by the body, to increase calcium absorption and assimilation. These include phosphorus, magnesium, vitamin D3, vitamin C, and zinc, in a base of essential fatty acids.
3. This formula is highly absorbable (bioavailable) because it comes in liquid-filled soft gelatin capsules. Tablet forms of nutritional supplements are not easily absorbed as, and therefore one needs to ingest much higher amounts in order to absorb the active ingredients. In liquid supplements, minerals are already dissolved, and therefore are immediately absorbable. InnoVite takes the superior bioavailability of this liquid formula a step further and has produced it in soft gelatin capsules. This format is easy to swallow and ensures the liquid calcium does not oxidize each time the bottle is opened.
