Humic substances are the most common forms of organic carbon in the natural
environment and are widespread on the surface of the earth. Most humic
substances are attached to inorganic components (clay and oxides), and a

can combine with metal ions, oxides and clay minerals to form water soluble

3,000 - 10,000 year old geologically young peat deposit on the shores of
Lake Balaton in Hungary. These peat deposits contain many types of humic and

Cobalt is known to influence iron metabolism and increase the
haemoglobin concentration in red blood cells. Cobalt is necessary for the
biological activity of vitamin B12 and it is also a component of several
enzymes necessary for amino acid metabolism.
Copper has a significant role in the formation of red blood cells. It
is required to absorb, utilise and synthesise haemoglobin, which is
necessary for red blood cell formation. Copper helps to maintain the
integrity of the outer covering of the nerves, metabolise vitamin C and
utilise fatty acids for energy. It influences iron and zinc balances and
when copper is in proper balance with zinc, the two elements act as
antioxidants by removing damaging free radicals. Copper deficiency may cause
an increase in cadmium toxicity; therefore, proper amounts may ensure that
cadmium heavy metal toxicity does not take hold. The estimated safe and
adequate daily dietary intake for copper is 1.5 - 3.0 mg/day. The optimal
intake is considered to be 1.5 - 4 mg/day. Diets provide about 0.9 - 1.0
mg/day for women and approximately 1.2 mg/day for men, which is below the
estimated safe and adequate intake range of 1.5 to 3.0 mg/day. Therefore, a

Manganese is involved in protein, fat, and energy metabolism. It is
also required for bone growth and development, and reproduction. Its
