Vitamin D3



Although at one time 400IU was considered appropriate for supplementation, many health care practitioners are now recommending 1000-4000IU/day, with doses as high as 10,000IU/day still being considered safe and necessary depending on the condition and assuming you are under the supervision of a healthcare provider.

It is fair to say that we are only just beginning to understand the immense difference that vitamin D can make in terms of everyday health and disease prevention.

Vitamin D plays an integral role in bone health, promoting our absorption of both calcium and phosphorus. For this reason, it is commonly used in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.

We are understanding more and more the importance that vitamin D is playing in supporting immune function. Vitamin D has the ability to modulate the immune response, rather than simply strengthen it. In cases of immune dysregulation (autoimmune disorders, cancer, psoriasis) it serves to balance the response, therefore decreasing the dangerous over-reaction to our own cells and tissues that is seen in many of these conditions. Research studying the use of vitamin D in influenza and various respiratory tract infections, has also showed some promising results. It is now considered one of the top supplements to use during cold and flu season to ward off the offending viruses and bacterium. Vitamin D deficiencies have been associated with an increased risk of influenza, as well as the common cold. The fat soluble vitamin has been shown to dramatically stimulate the expression of potent anti-microbial peptides, which exist in neutrophils, monocytes, natural killer cells, and in epithelial cells lining the respiratory tract. These cells play a major role in protecting the lung from infection.

Research on the effects that vitamin D status has on the incidence of cancer, particularly colorectal and other digestive system cancers, as well as female reproductive cancers, is also more than convincing. High vitamin D status was found to very significantly decrease the incidence of colorectal cancers in men (40%), as well as the incidence of other digestive system cancers. Vitamin D has been found to decrease proliferation, metastatic potential and angiogenesis of cancer cells, while simultaneously increasing differentiation and apoptosis.

Vitamin D has heart protective effects, as well. It has been shown to lower high blood pressure and is useful in the prevention of cardiovascular disease. Vitamin D is also being used in the management of Type II diabetes, as it has been shown to be involved in insulin secretion and glucose tolerance. Many mental disorders are now being correlated with vitamin D deficiency and supplementation is proving beneficial for many individuals suffering from depression, schizophrenia, seasonal effective disorder, manic/bipolar disorder and autism.

Vitamin D deficiency is considered less than 50 ng/ml of 25(OH)D, which is the active form of vitamin D in our bodies. Deficiency can occur with inadequate sun exposure, inadequate dietary intake, kidney or liver disease, and alcoholism. Elderly, dark-skinned, and obese populations, as well as those with fat malabsorption syndromes or inflammatory bowel disease, are also said to be at greater risk. Vitamin D deficiency causes rickets in children, leading to weak and deformed bones. In adults, deficiency can lead to osteomalacia, and osteoporosis, dental problems, muscle weakness and tooth decay.

When supplementing with Vitamin D, be sure to look for D3 (cholecalciferol) as it is significantly more efficient at raising 25(OH)D levels than the other form of D, D2 (ergocalciferol).

Bone Health


An adult human has 206 bones, which are constantly being renewed and remodeled. Bones perform several important roles in the body. Bones form a framework that supports the body and protects soft organs. They are an essential part of movement because they form attachment points for muscles. In fact, it is the arrangement of bones and the points of muscle attachment that determine the type of movement that can be done by our bodies.
Most people do not think about bone health until they are in their later years. This is a mistake because significant increases in bone density can only be made in childhood or early adulthood (up to age 30). For the remainder of our lives the goal is simply to maintain the bone density we already have.

What makes up bone?


The majority of bone is made up of something called the matrix (no relation to Neo), which has both organic and inorganic parts. Although we all picture bone as a block of mineral, the vast majority of bone is actually an organic (living) framework. This framework is made up of a number of different proteins (including Type I collagen) as well as sugar chains called glycosaminoglycans. The inorganic part of bone is made up of calcium and phosphate, which is simply deposited on the organic framework to add strength. Crawling along this matrix are two cell types called osteoblasts and osteoclasts. Osteoblasts build new bone, while osteoclasts break down old or damaged bone. In fact, approximately 20% of any adult's bones are being remodelled at any point in time, and up to 7% of our bone mass is broken down and replaced every week. This helps to keep our bones strong and new. In addition to their outer structure, the long bones of the body also contain an inner core of bone marrow that produces blood and immune cells.

Diet for Boosting Bone Health


A healthy diet, with sufficient protein intake, is one protective factor against bone loss. Dietary deficiencies of protein cause bone loss because the bone has to be broken down to free protein for the body's use. Ensuring adequate protein consumption can prevent this needless loss. Good dietary protein sources are: lean meats, fermented dairy products and legumes. If you cannot consume enough protein in your diet, be sure to supplement with protein powder or amino acid complex if you cannot consume enough protein. For more information on protein, please click here. Be sure to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, and try to have them raw or lightly steamed to prevent nutrient loss. Drink filtered or spring water. If you drink reverse osmosis or distilled water be sure to replace the missing minerals with a supplement.

Exercise and Bone


One of the most important factors influencing our bone density is actually weight-bearing exercise. The stress that we put on our bones during exercise actually creates micro-fractures in the bone that signal the body to remodel that area. This brings in osteoclasts to remove the old bone and osteoblasts to build fresh new bone in its place. Without these signals from exercise, all the food and supplements in the world can't help improve your bone density. This is the main reason astronauts lose bone density in space.

Vitamin D


Vitamin D helps bring calcium into the bone. It is one of the fat-soluble vitamins that are poorly absorbed through the digestive process as we age. In areas away from the equator, skin production of vitamin D is limited during certain times of the year. Eating vitamin D rich foods like fish and egg yolks, and taking vitamin D supplements, will help to maintain your bone density.

The description leaves out important information on D3: have to take vitamin K2 with it or the calcium will not travel to your bones. It will travel to you organs and travel in your blood but not good to your bones without K2.

I was told to take vitamin d by my doctor because my blood tests showed I was low in it. Probably due to the lack of sun here in Canada during the winter months. I really like taking this brand because of the soft gels. I will definitely buy again. Cant beat the deal as well!
