What is CoQ10?
CoQ10 is a fat-soluble, crystalline compound, which functions as a co-enzyme in the energy-producing metabolic pathways of every cell of the body, and exerts powerful antioxidant activity. Unlike vitamins, which by definition are not synthesized within the body, CoQ10 is synthesized in nearly every tissue of the body. Co-enzymes are organic molecules that activate a larger protein catalyst (an enzyme) that in turn facilitate a biological reaction without extinguishing themselves within that reaction. Quinones in the CoQ10 structure are molecules that serve as electron receptors in essential biological functions such as photosynthesis and respiration.
The Generation of ATP: CoQ10 is critical in generating the synthesis of ATP (or adenosine triphosphate, the energy “currency” of all cells). This process takes place in the mitochondria and involves an intricate and complex cascade of enzymatic reactions called the “electron transfer chain”.
Acts as a Redox agent: CoQ10 keeps other antioxidants (e.g. vitamins E and C) in their reduced active states. Since these vitamins are active in their reduced forms, CoQ10 recharges them (reduces them) by accepting electrons.
Antioxidant activity: Oxidation results from the breakdown of oxygen molecules as they combine with other molecules in the body. The resulting free radicals are highly reactive molecules, which interfere with enzymatic reactions and cause disruption of cell membranes and even DNA. CoQ10 has a strong ability to give up electrons quickly and thus acts as a powerful antioxidant against free radicals, affording protection against LDL oxidation, which is a pivotal step in the cause of arterial disease. CoQ10 also stabilizes cell membranes and platelets.
CoQ10 and Heart Health:
The use of CoQ10 as adjunctive therapy in the treatment of cardiovascular problems goes back decades. There have also been many studies examining the effect of CoQ10 as an addition to standard medical treatments, particularly those pertaining to irregular blood sugar and other manifestations of cardiovascular disorders. Getting enough EPA and DHA can be especially tough for vegetarians since the primary source of these essential fats is fish such as salmon and anchovies.
