HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES & VACCINATIONS
Q. Hello, What herbs or homeopathic remedies can be given to a child after a vaccination? I have heard some talk about herbs being given after vaccinations to prevent reaction, or toxin build up.
A. The Debate
Instead of going into a debate about the pros and cons of vaccination, I will simply suggest that you do some reading and become informed yourself about the benefits and risks of vaccination in general, and with specific vaccines. You do have options and it's important not to simply follow the advice of "an expert" without being sure you understand the whole issue and where your opinion lies. I think it's important to take a look at the vaccination protocol in other countries, such as Europe and Japan to get a better idea of how our 'rules' are different and could be manipulated to make you and your baby the most comfortable, happy and healthy, no matter what decision you make. As much research as there is supporting the need and safety of vaccinations in childhood, there are also many other studies showing potential correlation between certain vaccinations and the increasing number of children developing insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, asthma and allergy, inflammatory bowel diseases, ear infection, eczema, autism, ADHD and increased risk of SIDS. The health of your child is vitally important to you and deserves an educated and informed decision.
If you choose to go ahead and get the vaccines as recommended, or play with the 'typical' protocol - perhaps delaying it until your child's immune system is more mature or opting to do single vaccines to avoid the potential strain that combined multiple vaccines in one injection may cause - there are other natural ways to ensure that the body is ready and can 'handle' the vaccine as efficiently as possible.
Elimination
One of the most important things to consider is the child's elimination pattern/bowel habits. No matter what the age, make sure your child is regular and there is no constipation prior to vaccination. This way you can feel confident that your child will be able to eliminate any added unwanted preservatives, toxins, etc., as needed, and there is less risk for build-up in the system. Aloe vera juice, prunes and prune juice are all gentle and effective options to help increase and promote regularity. It is also recommended that you do not have your child vaccinated when they already have a fever or infection. Reschedule until you are sure the infection is fully cleared and your child's immune system is ready to handle to added burden.
Although there is a genetic component to the development of psoriasis, many consider it an autoimmune condition. One theory is that T cells become active (it is unclear why, although this process could occur with an overactive or dysfunctional immune response) as they would in infection. These T cells move to the dermis of the skin and trigger the release of cytokines (like TNF-α), which cause inflammation and the rapid production of skin cells.
Pre and Post Vaccination suggestions
In terms of supplementation, most of the typical protocols prior to vaccination suggest you start 4-6 weeks pre vaccination and continue on anywhere from 1-3 months following. That being said, other professionals will recommend supplementation the day before, the day of, and the day after vaccination. The truth is there is no one gold standard to follow. Choose a schedule and protocol that you feel comfortable with and will easily fit into your daily schedule without adding unnecessary stress to your life, or you child's'.. Consider supplementing with L-glutamine and probiotics to ensure a healthy gut flora, healthy absorption of nutrients and elimination of waste. 500-1000 mg vitamin C and 50 mg of vitamin B6 daily have also been recommended both pre and post vaccination to support the immune system. Zinc and vitamin D3 are also recommended by some for immune support. Homeopathics are also often recommended for children to support vaccination preparedness. Thuja (30C) is one remedy that is often prescribed by homeopathic doctors right after vaccination and once daily for 3-4 days following. Silicea is another, as is ant tart, arsenicum, and stramonium. A homeopath in your area would be best able to match a specific remedy to your child.
If you are still breastfeeding...
If you are a breastfeeding mom, looking for added protection for babe before vaccinations, there are also some things you can take yourself, both before and after baby's vaccination, to ensure least chance of complications or side effects. A good start is vitamin C, about 1000-2000 mg/day in divided doses. Continue to take your prenatal vitamin, as the added folic acid will still be helpful – if you aren't already, you should continue to take it during the course of breastfeeding. Also consider a fish oil supplement, high in omega 3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. In terms of diet, make sure your diet is low in common allergens like dairy and eggs, as well as low in immune suppressing foods such as sugar and processed/pre made foods. Post vaccination, add an astragalus, echinacea and/or oat straw tea into your daily routine for further immune support.
No matter what decision you make in regards to vaccination for your children, as long as it is an informed decision, rest assured it is the right decision for you and your family. Following some of these simple supplement and lifestyle suggestions, or modifying the 'typical' vaccination schedule, if you decide to vaccinate, may both be ways to help put your mind at ease and feel best supported.
