Basil Essential Oil
Most people are familiar with basil as a delicious culinary herb that enhances all sorts of yummy pasta dishes, decadent tomato-based sauces, and zesty and refreshing salads. Indeed, basil is a staple of Italian cuisine, but did you know it is also a highly-prized essential oil and an integral part of aromatherapy?
Basil (Ocimum basilicum) is loaded with precious essential oils and contains 29 potent plant compounds, the primary ones being oxygenated monoterpenes, sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, and oxygenated sesquiterpenes. This complex chemical composition imparts basil essential oil with its robust therapeutic benefits. Among other things, it is prized for its ability to help balance, calm, nourish, and strengthen the body, treat headaches, coughs, diarrhea, and constipation when applied topically with a carrier oil.
There are three main types of basil essential oil - Holy Basil, Sweet Basil, and Tropical Basil – all three belonging to the Lamiaceae mint family. While all three have similar chemical compositions, they do differ somewhat.
Holy Basil (or Tulsi) - is more irritating than other types of basil, so it should not be used on the skin. It has a sweet, warm scent and is ideal for relieving stress and anxiety, in addition to all of the usual applications of basil oil.
Sweet Basil - is the most widely used form of this essential oil. It can be used on the skin diluted up to 2% in a carrier oil to improve skin tone.
Tropical Basil - has a more pungent, camphor-like scent. It energizes both body and mind and is often diffused to ease headaches and respiratory conditions. Tropical basil is considered a skin irritant, so it is best reserved for diffuser use.
Benefits Of Basil Essential Oil
- Helps Alleviate Nausea
- Improves Digestion
- Nourishes The Skin
- Promotes Calm & Relaxation
- Soothes Symptoms Of The Cold & Flu, and Associated Fevers
Basil Oil Medicinal Properties
Basil essential oil has natural anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, antibiotic, and diuretic properties and has been a staple of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for years. Today, basil oil is frequently recommended to support digestion and ease stomach cramps and is a first-rate treatment for the cold and flu. It's also a great stress-fighter, muscle relaxant, and natural odour eliminator.
This essential oil is especially excellent for skincare and has been shown to nourish, repair, balance, calm, exfoliate, and brighten the complexion. It offers comparable benefits for hair and can be added to shampoos, masks and conditioners to hydrate, soften, deeply condition, and strengthen the hair.
Just as interestingly, this essential oil can fight various forms of bacteria on the skin, which is why it is sometimes added to body care products.
Using Aromatherapy Oils
Basil essential oil can be diffused using an aromatherapy diffuser or vaporizer. For topical use, it should be diluted with the carrier oil of your choice in a 1:1 ratio (less if you have sensitive skin) before being massaged into the skin.
Basil has a warm, sweet, freshly floral, and crisply herbaceous aroma and blends well with bergamot, clary sage, clove bud, geranium, lime, lemon, hyssop, juniper, eucalyptus, neroli, marjoram, rosemary, Melissa, and lavender. Combining essential oils serves to multiply benefits and can offer attractive synergistic benefits.
