Wow: that hormones can cause or contribute to the cold sore phenomenon is wild. Your articles are giving me more sympathy when women in my life say that hormones drive them crazy. I did not realize diet, also, could be something that contributes to cold sores. It is neat, that particular amino acids can affect cold sores. And, that different proteins have different effects because of the different amino acids. Like, lysine blocking but arginine (because it helps the virus multiply better) driving the cold sores. Weird!

Cold sores are associated with dementia risk! There is thought that this is due to herpes simplex virus/genetic predisposition there but other factors you bring up, I am thinking, could be relevant to the association. For example, an altered/generally decreased immune system due to other infections or stress and hormonal fluctuations or poor diet (white flour and sugar products and trans-fat products like margarine and shortening) might underly some of the risk.

I get cold sores whenever it get's really cold and my face is exposed, i actually have one forming right now, but I think it's going down, and not going to form properly. I take lysine for muscle synthesis but also for cold sores. I mix lysine with calcium, magnesium alongside Vitamin c and bioflavonoids. When I am sick, I take echinacea, garlic, goldenseal, lemons and oil of oregano. I often mix and match until I feel better. Getting suck is awful but at least it doesn't last a long time if you know how to fight colds with supplements.

I have been getting cold sores most of my life, and one thing I learned in my teens is that they can erupt with a lot of stress. I experienced a substantial amount of stress in my teens, and therefore spent a lot of time treating these painful lesions. What I didnt realize though, is that there are nutrients we can take to suppress them, that is amazing news. I wish regular doctors were more educated in natural medicine, it would result in a much healthier population. Thank you for giving us a reliable place to go to find useful information.
