It is funny that when I read this is toward the end of the day on a Friday trying to get more work in. I think that stress when it is not a burn out kind of stress can at a certain level drive what Paul Sheldon in King's Misery called "the gotta". Like the urge to get things done. But sometimes I have none. And it is vexing. To have all this work but no energy.

I slept well last night. That has a lot to do with it, as you mention, the sleep. Toxin accumulation from medications, environmental sources or food and water is something I did not think about but I can see how it can leave people drained. Toxin accumulation from medications, environmental sources or food and water. Lack of exercise...I definitely get that too. It is ironic, how being too tired to exercise can actually make you more tired!

Hello Rachel,
We are sorry to hear you suffer from this. Insomnia can be debilitating as not receiving adequate sleep can make it hard to focus and function the following day, not to mention how run down it makes your body feel. It's also said that fatigued driving can be just as risky as driving under the influence of alcohol. As always, thank you for your comment!

Hello Kaveh,
We could all use a natural energy boost! Ashwagandha is a more stabilizing adaptogen, it helps support your adrenal health and lessens feelings of stress. Thank you for sharing how you take different herbs.
Energy is something I am always interested in increasing so long as it doesn't cost me down the road. I take licorice to wake up, once I took it first thing in the morning, it increases cortisol. Ashwagandha works better for me, but I don't feel it increases energy, rather stabilizes whatever state you're already in. Astragalus again didn't increase energy for me, rather works like Ashwa. Sane with Siberian Ginseng. Kelp I add to Miso soup when I order sushi it works well as a detox not sure about energy but I take it all the same. Red Korean Ginseng and Gotu Kola for sure give energy. I take both as teas and tinctures.

I used to suffer from insomnia and I 100% agree that it can sap the life out of you!! Even 1-2 days of poor sleep can have a dramatic effect and can even be an equivalent to alcohol consumption (although I have abstained from alcohol my whole life so I cannot really judge that from personal experience). Indeed, as you mention, sleep is when our bodies repair the normal damage from the daily activity and so I think that in order to promote healthy energy, healthy sleep should be the uttmost priority!

Hello Paul,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Coffee can come with a crash or cause jitters or feelings of anxiety in some. To increase energy, doing a healthy, clean detox, including ditching caffeine, can be beneficial in increasing natural energy levels.
Coffee can affect your mood. Instead of boosting your mood, caffeine actually produces stress hormones, which can trigger anxiety, irritability and insomnia. Most of us are already running around in a state of “fight or flight,” so ditching coffee is essential for helping us stay calm in our stressful lives.
Coffee is void of nutrients. One of the key principles of the Conscious Cleanse is to focus on nutrient-dense food. Not only does coffee deplete the body of nutrients, it’s got nothing to give us in exchange short of a very temporary pick me up. Enough said! Coffee you’re fired!

I am happy that I read this article as I do suffer from lack of energy and fatigue. It was very useful to know all the foods or things that cause depleted energy and fatigue as well as what you can take or do in order to counter these effects. It goes to show that your body is amazing and is basically alerting you to any problems that it is dealing with. Who know that something as basic as fatigue could be an indicator to something more serious that is happening in your body. Thanks for the knowledge!
