It is good, fatty liver can be detected several different ways. I am no expert of the liver but even I have heard of AST and ALT. The biopsy of the liver gives a lot of information, it sounds: to look at fat deposits and the state of the liver’s cellular structure and the inflammation levels of the liver too. Of course as you mention biopsy is invasive and a hassle. So it is great there also can be information obtained from ultrasound, CT scan and MRI which may be used to diagnose.

Hello Kaveh,
We're sorry to hear your mother has fatty liver disease, we hope she can apply some of the tips you've learned and that they can help her. Milk thistle is a great herb for liver health.
M mother has this issue due to obesity, not alcohol. She refuses to change her diet, so I have recommended milk thistle, as it cleanses the liver & helps regenerated damaged liver cells. Especially good for Toxins. Tea does not have much taste but it can be mixed with other detox like alfalfa or dandelion. Or just take these teas by themself, burdock is good, although it is for detox, lowers blood pressure. Red Clover is good for evening, relax. Chlorophyll cleans the system
Bromelain is good for joints. Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant. I take all of these, but my mother refuses all.

...can hurt you! I didn't know until I read your article that the vast majority of people with fatty liver disease actually will have no idea that anything is wrong since symptoms of fatty liver disease begin to appear only when the liver is damaged and begins the process of cirrhosis (only then is it that the symptoms, which can include fluid retention, muscle wasting, fatigue, increased susceptibility to bruising, jaundice, and abdominal fullness). It is good to know this to keep an eye out! I am not at risk of fatty liver and even more thankful I abstain from alcohol after reading!

Hello Lala,

A good general rule for supporting a healthy liver when you have FLD, is avoiding the bad fats, and ensuring that you eat enough of the essential fats, like those that you mention in your question. A naturopath's recommendations will also usually include eating more vegetables, and eating less refined carbohydrates.

Stay well!

Hello Emma,

We are sorry to hear about your husbands health, but glad we could help provide some needed information. We hope you find the right protocol for his needs. Perhaps he can try different supplement formats if he doesn't like capsules or try meal replacement drinks that taste good to help with dietary changes.

Have a healthy day!

Husband had his physical checkup last summer and his blood work showed a very high risk of fatty liver. This article helps, however making sure he follows a healthier diet and taking supplements is another challenge. He still forgets (intentionally don’t want to remember) to take his daily multivitamin. :(
Wish there is a one time pill I can make him take and he will listen.
