You are right. Food sensitivity is a wide umbrella. Thank you for explaining more about what is under the umbrella. I appreciate that you explain more about it so I understand it more, scientifically. It is still broad, though! More like a classification of exclusion, it being specifically non-IgE mediated immune reactions that are caused directly or even indirectly by the presence of certain foods in the digestive tract. It is uplifting, the final note that you leave about people being able to overcome intolerance with time

Hello Kaveh,
Food poisoning is terrible, especially when travelling. Food sensitivities are also difficult to navigate, especially upon first onset and trying to figure out what foods you can and can't have or how to deal with a flare up. One sensitivity many people suffer from is lactose intolerance, learn more here: https://www.nationalnutrition.ca/articles/health-concerns/lactose-intolerance/

I used to travel a lot, and I remember getting food sickness from toxic reactions, for example in Sicily, outside of Palermo, I had some street food, sweets, like a cannoli, it made me sick, later the locals told me not to get street food sweets, but it was too late, I was sick for 48 hours in bed. It happened again with watermelon in Albania, donuts in Mexico, table water in Hong Kong, all these issues can be avoided by making sure clean water is used. Bad tea in Morocco because of the water.

I study immunology but autoimmunity, not allergy and it is good to know that food allergy, food sensitivity, and food intolerance are all caused by distinct immune processes: you do an excellent job differentiating between them and this was a good read for me! Allergy=IgE, sensitivity=non-IgE immune response, and intolerance means failure to successfully digest or break down/metabolize: noted! Anyway, the rest of this article was an interesting read as well. I appreciate you providing such great resources. And, NN, it was nice that Dr. Katy added a note here as well :)

Hello, OH,
The amount of options in store and in restaurants now is great for those with sensitivities. Even without having a sensitivity, it's nice to swap out high inflammatory foods such as gluten and dairy once in a while. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this article, we're glad you have enjoyed learning more tips on how to identify and live with differing food issues. To understand the big ones even more, look at these articles:

Hello, Oh,

Thank you for sharing, food sensitivities effect many people unfortunately. Following some of these steps can help you identify which foods upset you, including the condition of your skin. Foods that induce inflammation are best to avoid if you suffer from acne, rosacea or eczema. To learn more, read through this article on skin health:

I myself have some food sensitivities and they come and go depending on my diet and how long I go with the elimination diet. I know it can be frustrating to not know what is causing you to have an upset stomach or other symptoms but it is worth it to find some time to figure it out and eliminate it slowly from your diet, you will feel a lot better! I have some rosacea flare-ups too depending on my food sensitivities which I found was interesting.

Food sensitivities are very common but can be so limiting! If you have ever experienced an intolerance, you may carry around some anxiety towards eating new foods. I know that sometimes cutting out dairy and then re-eating it will cause me to have sensitivities. It is hard to eliminate foods and slowly reintroduce them to figure out which ones you may be sensitive to but it is worth it. Eating a diet that agrees with you and makes you feel good is the best way to eat! With food sensitivities being more common, it is nice to see more restaurants accommodating and offering foods that are better suited towards those sensitives.
