Licorice candy has a few health benefits. Though of course as it is toxic to the system in large doses (can lower potassium among other things), it should be consumed in moderation. DGL brings up the note in my mind, which I would like to make here, that regular licorice can also help, with this condition. Of course DGL is safer long term. But it is nice that one candy isn't "all bad"! Licorice, both DGL and candy, can hel soothe and coat the mucous membranes of the whole gut and GI Tract!!

I have an abnormally shaped esophagus, which means that reflux is essentially inevitable. I do not take antacids and did not realize antacids were so bad-I knew that they could disrupt the body's natural digestive function with excess calcium but did not realize that they could contain excess amounts of sodium, aluminum, and magnesium as well. For me, I find that eating meals slowly and carefully as well as avoiding irritating or acidic foods at the end of the day, when I cannot control the reflux so well, is the best solution. Thank you for a great article! This gave me several ideas to try for my own reflux

Hello Roger,
We love to hear what works for our viewers and what they've tried. All of what you mentioned are excellent ways to support digestive health, especially if you experience GERD. Bitters are great, because we often cook quicker meals; therefore, our digestion process doesn't have time to trigger and catch up before we start eating.

Have a healthy day!

The best thing for GERD in my opinion is to eat smaller meals and also not to lie down 2 hours after a meal or even a snack. Ginger tea or any other form of ginger is a good remedy. HCL and also bitters work very well. Excellent info in this article.

Hello Al,

We're glad you enjoyed this article and thanks for sharing what's worked for you. In our modern society we often eat quick meals which can further upset the digestive system as it hasn't been triggered to start the digestion process, which as you know from reading the article, should start well before the first bite. We hope you enjoy our other articles and recipes as well!

Stay healthy & well!
