I knew that homocysteine was bad and had vague memory it had to do with oxidative stress and heart issues: thank you for such a great explination of the mechanism! It is good to know that homocysteine's linkage to heart disease and stroke might result from circulating homocysteine 1) causing injury to the delicate cells of the coronary arteries and 2) effecting the action of blood platelets to promote blood clot formation (blood clots, as you mention, can travel to the heart or brain and this would result in either heart attack or stroke). Thank you for another great article, NN!

Despite an extremely healthy life (supplements, exercise, lots of sleep and water, no processed foods) my homocysteine was an 11. I found out I don't methylate properly and after taking B12 and 5-MTHF for several months it dropped to 5.5!

Very, very good article on Homocysteine. This is the first time I read an article where I can understand the implication of Homocysteine on heart and brain health. In addition, we are given the solution to neutralize this substance that is harmful to our health when it is present in excess in our body. More and more studies tell us that a high level of homocysteine is a powerful and independent risk factor in more than 100 major pathologies, including heart disease, stroke and Alzheimer's disease.
