Thank you for this article... I always thought marine might be superior, but glad to read this article which explains. I have taken bovine collagen for a lot of years; I had injured a knee several times and it helped a lot. Recently, the marine collagen was on the shelf when my regular brand was not available so I decided to try it. OMG, within several days I could feel a difference in my knees.... less pain, a bit more stability in the joint... maybe a coincidence I don't know, but I will think about perhaps using both and see what happens... Thank you.

Hello Anita,

You can generally mix them to get a broader spectrum dose of collagen, but better might be to take one in the morning and one in the afternoon so your body can better absorb each one.

Have a healthy day.

I have the marine collagen made of salmon. I am happy with it. I take it with Vitamin C or as part of a smoothie. The only reason I didn't get the bovine is because of being a vegetarian. I can feel it working inside after I take it, usually on an empty stomach, otherwise I feel nothing. Taking supplements on an empty stomach is the best way to see the kind of effect, if any it has on the body. I always take 1/4 of a capsule or just the tip of a teaspoon if in powder form, just to get a taste. If all goes well the first time around, I go to half a capsule. Once I reach the sweet spot, I stay put. It's a dosing system that works well trying out new supplements.

Hello Rachel,
Indeed, to benefit from the full spectrum of collagen you need to ensure you're getting all 3 types. You could do this by taking collagen from the differing sources on alternate days or do a half dose of each. When your body produces collagen, it makes it with the proper ratio of all 3 types, which you can find some supplements that follow this ratio in their formulation, here's one of those supplements: https://www.nationalnutrition.ca/organika-full-spectrum-collagen-type-1-2-3-bone-broth-flavour-250g.html

It's so cool that research suggests marine collagen may have skin-promoting health benefits! Also, it seems that a mix of both marine and bovine collagen would be best to cover one's bases as this would give a source of Type I (bone, skin, and connective tissue + the gut lining, Type II (cartilage tissue that cushions our joints) and Type III (skin, muscles, and blood vessels) collagen.
Finally, I appreiate that you break down personal as well as practical reasons why a person may prefer one type of collagen to another. Thank you for this great article! :)
