I have heard about pineapple digestive enzymes, but, National Nutrition, you helped me learn the name to the enzymes found in pineapple-bromelains. I see in the last section and, again, in the summary that there are many cases in which bromelain should not be taken, eg when one has stomach ulcers active bleeding, cardiovascular disease, or hypertension, or when one is taking a variety of specific medications, or two weeks before dental surgery. Are there certain side effects that cause bromelain to be harmful in these cases?

I had no idea bromelain is only in the stem of pineapple....I've read that pineapple itself is good for digestion. I wonder if there are other properties of pineapple that make it good for digestion or if it's an old wive's tale that bromelain is in the actual pineapple and therefore assumed to be good for digestion. It's also interesting that you need to discontinue use 2 weeks prior to dental work or surgery. Would never have thought that.

Bromelain had been suggested by a friend for use as an anti-inflammatory. After reading this article - I learned that I had to be careful not to use when taking Nsaids or Aspirin. Will try it to see if indeed there is a difference in my arthritis inflammation.
