I had learned about L-carnitine in biochemistry in college. But, after that, my knoledge of it receeded into a corner in the back of my mind. I forgot what it did and, to me, it just became another sports nutrition ingredient But, you fixed that for me! No, just like mitochondion is etched forever into my mind as "the powerhouse of the cell", l-carnitine is now in my mind both a "fat shuttle" (this is such a funny visual too!!!) And, the mitochondrion is also a furnace to me too :) Thank you for the fun analogies!!: it's back to biochem, only this time funner :)

Hello DLynn,
Thank you for your question, we're glad you've been enjoying our articles.

There has been a lot of research on this topic. Given carnitine's important role in energy metabolism, carnitine is required by virtually every cell in the body. Mitochondria also exist in most cells of the body and are heavily dependent on carnitine to make ATP—a source of energy required for the development of oocytes and embryos.

Carnitine also has some antioxidant properties. In addition to other health complications, oxidative stress is known to negatively impact male and female fertility, as well as the success of IVF.

Due to these properties, a recent study (2018) evaluated the effects of carnitine on embryo quality and birth outcomes by comparing groups of women who had IVF procedures completed with or without carnitine added to the IVF solution. The results showed that women in the carnitine group had higher quality embryos, implantation rates, and pregnancy rates as compared to the group without carnitine.

Another recent trial evaluated the effects of oral carnitine supplementation in women who had previously failed to conceive using IVF methods. In this trial, the women were assigned to take carnitine supplements for an average of three months before repeating their IVF treatment. The results indicated that, after taking carnitine supplements, women were more likely to have healthier embryos, to conceive successfully, and to have successful births than when using IVF without carnitine supplementation.

So while more research is needed, carnitine may support increased fertility in women.

If you have any future questions, please don't hesitate to ask, we're always here to help.

Stay healthy & well.

Hello Jill,

We're glad our article could give you more insight into the essential amino acid, L-Carnitine. While it does help increase muscle growth and recovery when working out, it does have many other benefits for overall health. The active "L" form also means it's better absorbed by the body. If you have any future inquiries, please reach out, our team is always happy to help!

Have a healthy day.
