I had forgotten about SOD but this article sent me straight back to my memories of the awesome SOD from organic chemistry. I'm curently a PhD student studying how the human gut microbiome interacts with autoimmune disease. I know of the fact that white blood cells can release large amounts of superoxide to neutralize deleterious bacteria present in the tissues and that this can cause adverse consequences, particularly in the context of autoimmune diseases such as RA, MS, and lupus, creating a destructive cycle of inflammation and superoxide release. I had forgotten about SOD, which can "put out the fire" by disassembling the superoxide, thus preventing further inflammation and tissue destruction. I'm going to be reading up more on the interaction between the human gut microbiome and SOD-maybe it will even ne relevant to my PhD project!!
