Thank you for your comment, we're glad you enjoyed this article. On the topics of oxalates, almonds do have a higher oxalate content but you can reduce oxalate content by soaking them in water first.

I heard almonds are high in oxalates, so I have been avoiding them. Is that a mistake? I'd like the other benefits, not sure how much oxalic acid my organs can filter out? I also wasn't sure if almonds should be taken with calcium? in order to reduce the oxalates? Like in a yogurt smoothie? Brazil nuts as well? Since both almonds and brazil nuts are high in oxalates? I had no idea you can make your own almond milk using a nut bag. Is that the same idea as a cheesecloth? I use a bandana to make labneh cheese, I will try it for almond milk. To be honest, I've never really found high quality almonds, so I have avoided them and focus on more black sesame seeds, golden flax, and chia seed. As well as pumpkin and sunflower seeds.

Like other commenters, I agree that almonds are tasty, versatile in useages, and are awesome ingredients to use for crafting vegan & healthier alternatives. To respond to VeggieGirl's comment specifically, almonds ARE not necessarily NOT environmentlly friendly: almond milk is better for the environment than, say, cow's milk, but less environmentally friendly than other plant-based alternatives. Also, like Paula I had no idea that Almonds were a seed, not a nut, so I will add that to my little list of fun facts I keep around-thank you for another great article, NN! :D

This article gives a lot of good info. I eat almonds mainly due to it being low carb and it is good to know the benefits it offers as well. I also zap them for a snack or chop them into the flour when baking goodies. I love them in my homemade chocolate as well!! National Nutrition articles are a great resource that I am enjoying nowadays.

Almonds are tasty, versatile and made awesome vegan alternatives. However, they are expensive to grow and not environmentally friendly. The water used to grow almonds - which is now one of the most lucrative crop for farmers - is one of the major cause of draught in California, which also largely contributed to the forest fire.
There are ‘less guilty’ nuts out there. For me, I go for walnuts.
