Updated Oct. 30th, 2017
Take movie night to a whole other level when you serve these guilt-free, ops, we meant to say gluten-free snack. The only thing better than it bringing the same ooey-gooey taste, is that these mozzarella dippers can be made in the comfort of your own home; no restaurant needed! With the same flavor you love these dippers will add that extra special touch, no matter when you serve them.
- Gluten Free
- Sugar Free
- Vegetarian
Ingredients:
12 sticks of goat mozzarella cheese | 2 teaspoons italian seasoning | marinara or pasta sauce for dipping (optional) |
½ cup coconut oil or other frying oil | 1/8 teaspoon sea salt | |
½ cup blanched finely ground almond flour | 1 egg |
Directions
- Freeze cheese sticks overnight, for no less than 12 hours.
- In a frying pan, heat coconut oil on medium-high heat
- While you’re waiting for the oil to heat up, in a small bowl combine your dry ingredients: mix your almond flour, Italian seasoning and salt together. Move to the side.
- In a separate bowl, beat your egg until it is frothy and well mixed.
- Now comes the fun part. One at a time, grab a cheese stick and roll it in the egg mixture until it is well coated. From here, move the cheese stick to the dry ingredients and ensure it is well coated. Place each cheese stick on a baking sheet until they are all finished.
- Gently place each coated cheese stick into the hot oil. Be mindful to keep turning each stick every 10-15 seconds to ensure it doesn’t get burnt. Once they have been cooked on each side and they have that crunch, golden glow, remove from the oil and place on a paper towel lined plate, this will remove any unneeded oil from the dish.
- Enjoy right away, with or without dip!
Make It This Way
If you’d like to go dairy-free with this recipe, try substituting cheese with jicima or lightly cooked potatoes cut into wedges. Avoid unwanted fillers and food additives by making your own homemade Italian seasoning – ingredients listed below.
Homemade Italian Seasoning
Pulse these ingredients in a spice grinder or small food processor and store in a glass jar.
- 1 tbsp dried oregano
- 1 tbsp dried marjoram
- 1 tbsp dried basil
- 1 tbsp dried thyme
- 1 tbsp dried rosemary
- 1 tbsp dried parsley
- 1 tbsp dried cilantro
Try This
Not a fan of marinara sauce? Try dunking your mozzarella dippers in another sauce of your choosing. Might we suggest a plain Greek yogurt with some extra Italian seasoning mixed in to bring out the flavours more.
A classic! Cheese sticks are such an amazing appetizer and definitely a crowd favourite and a crowd pleaser so knowing how to make your own is a great game changer especially if you plan on hosting guest or just enjoying a nice date night! This recipe makes it seem so simple and will no doubt be just as delicious! I always wondered how to make them and wouldn’t have thought of freezing the cheese first but that makes so much sense! Great recipe, thanks for sharing! I will definitely have to keep this cheese sticks recipe in mind! Yum!
Hello,
Yes, it's all in the little details. This recipe is great for the gluten-free crowd and can also be turned vegan by using plant based cheese! Plant based cheese is actually creamier sometimes, may be messier, but definitely kicks the mozza sticks up a notch.
Happy eating!
I'm going to have to share this recipe with my Mom. It's so cool how you have made mozzerella sticks-no starchy bread crumbs included!! (these will certainly be a much better option for dental health and I can also imagine that anyone limiting carbohydrates would prefer the healthy fats provided by the almond flour. It would be so cool if fo some of your recipes in adition to the healthy ingredients breakdown you provide, you have a breakdown of ingredients in the original recipe that are unhealthy in certain contexts/being improved upon
Hello Rachel,
Thank you for your suggestion and we are glad you're excited to pass this recipe along to your mom. Many people are looking for gluten-free twists on their favourite food items, we agree that this one is perfect. You can also take it one step further and make it dairy-free by using plant-based cheese shreds or sticks.
Enjoy!
Cheese sticks or mozzarella poppers are literally soo good! I love these, they are so good! Cheese sticks were one of my favorite foods growing up! I used to love eating them from Red Lobster with the popcorn shrimp! I love that we can take an old classic and pit a healthy spin on them for kids today! I know the Cheese sticks that I grew up eating weren't nearly as healthy as these ones are.
Hello,
Indeed, putting a healthy spin on culinary classics is always a treat! We're glad you enjoyed this recipe for its nostalgia and taste.
