By making your own patties, you can ensure you know every single ingredient that’s feeding your family, without the unnecessary additives and sugars that go into the store-bought brands. Plus, you can get creative with your spices and it only takes a few minutes to prep, then the oven does the rest of the work for you. Ingredients:
1 lb ground bison | ½ cup quinoa flakes or wheat germ | ½ teaspoon sea salt |
½ lb ground yak | 2 tablespoon grainy mustard | ½ teaspoon pepper |
¾ cup finely chopped onions | 3 tablespoon parsley | |
1 egg | ½ teaspoon crumbled dried thyme |
Directions
Turn your oven on to 350F
- Using a large bowl, combine all ingredients together, mixing thoroughly – using your hands to mash if needed.
- Using your hands, divide the meat mixture into 4-5 patties, no more than ¾ inch thick.
- Place patties into a frying pan and cook each side on medium heat for no more than 7 minutes. Note: if you want the oven to do most of the work, sear the burgers on high heat for only one minute on each side, so you can keep the juices in while they’re baking.
- Remove patties from the pan, and finish baking in the oven for 30 minutes. Use a meat thermometer to ensure they are fully cooked!
Make It This Way
Yak is a wild ox, and has more of a game-like taste. If you are unsure about it, or are having troubles finding it, you can substitute for beef instead, or use more bison.
We all have our own favourite homemade burger spices we add, so get creative and throw a few of your own touches in this recipe.
Try This
If you prefer, you can skip the frying part of the cooking process and just bake the burgers until they’re fully cooked. Just remember that a quick sear before baking helps to seal in the juices!
