Vegan Sesame Cheese Sauce

Mmm…Cheesy goodness! Who said you couldn’t enjoy a little Mac n’ cheese and be vegan at the same time. Now with this nut-free, vegan sesame cheese sauce you will be happy to know you can go back to old habits and still accommodate your healthy lifestyle choice. The nutritional yeast provides your cheesy taste while some seasoning helps bring the flavours to life. Spread this over some pasta or enjoy it with some steamed broccoli to bring you back to your childhood days!

Makes roughly 1 cup

  • Vegetarian

Ingredients:

¾ cup water1 tablespoon virgin coconut oil¼ teaspoon onion powder
¼ cup sesame seeds¼ cup nutritional yeast¼ teaspoon garlic powder
2 teaspoon lemon juice1 teaspoon yellow mustard¼ teaspoon sea salt

Directions

  1. Over medium-low heat, bring your coconut oil to a melt in a medium sized pan.
  2. Once melted, stir in your nutritional yeast and whisk until fully coated.
  3. In a blender combine your water, sesame seeds and lemon juice until smooth. Pour mixture into the pan and mix thoroughly.
  4. Add in all remaining ingredients, whisking and cooking for another 2-3 minutes, or until your sauce thickens up.
  5. Remove from heat and use as desired!

Make It This Way

If you prefer, you can swap out the coconut oil for a less-sweet version of oil, such as avocado, grapeseed or olive.

We recommend using fresh squeezed lemon juice for best tasting results!

If you prefer more of a nutty taste, try lightly toasting your sesame seeds in the oven for five minutes before blending.

Try This

Kick this sauce up a notch by adding a bit of cayenne pepper and a touch of smoked paprika!

    I love cheese sauce so when trying to eat more ethically it is definitely something I miss so I love this great dairy-free and vegan alternative! I love cheese sauce but making it the traditional way can take up some time. This recipe takes no time at all and looks delicious! Such a quick and easy way to make a great cheese sauce in half the time and with no dairy in it! Great recipe and idea, thanks for sharing!

    cheese sauce

    I love a good cheese sauce and honestly could use cheese sauce on pretty much any recipe that I make but I really do not like to consume dairy, especially on days when my stomach feels more sensitive than others so having a vegan recipe to refer too that is reliable dairy free is awesome. I look forward to trying new recipes for cheese sauces, this one looks delicious and simple to make too which is convenient.

    Wow, what an easy recipe! I love when recipes are simple and only use a handful of ingredients. This could be made quickly and easily with ingredients that are often on-hand or can be easily found, and it could also be easily modified to give it different flavour profiles as well. I'm going to have to try this as a dip for veggies or tortilla chips, on top of kale chips, and to make a vegan mac and cheese dish.
