Blueberry Supplements

Did you know that beyond being delicious and colourful, blueberries are one of the most nutritiously dense antioxidant fruits? Indeed, blueberries and blueberry supplements are loaded with nutrients such as; fibre, vitamins A, C, E, and K, as well as many of the B-complex vitamins, potassium, and manganese. Blueberries also contain many phytonutrients, such as anthocyanins, polyphenols, chlorogenic acid, epicatechin, and phenolics; these are powerful free radical scavengers that help protect the body’s cells and tissues against damage.

Anthocyanins are especially concentrated in blueberries, which naturally bolsters the body’s antioxidant defences. This is why blueberries are considered to have one of the highest ORAC scores of any fruit, or 6552 ORAC units. Many chronic and degenerative diseases, such as unhealthy cell growth, Alzheimer's, Parkinson’s, and heart disease are caused, to a great extent, by oxidative stress and free radicals. Antioxidants can eliminate these free radicals. The current recommendation is to consume between 3000 to 5000 ORAC units daily to protect the body from free radical damage.

Benefits of Blueberry Supplements

  • Enhances Antioxidant Protection
  • Helps Regulate Blood Sugar
  • Protects Eye health
  • Supports Optimal Cardiovascular Health

Who Needs Blueberries?

Your practitioner may recommend you increase your intake of blueberries, or start taking a concentrated blueberry extract, to enhance your overall antioxidant status, orto help your body process glucose more efficiently, improve insulin sensitivity, improve circulation, maintain, and/orhelp prevent and treat varicose veins and hemorrhoids. Blueberries can also maintain optimal eye and vision health, as well as prevent and treat cataracts, macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and reduce inflammation. Like other potent antioxidant, Blueberry supplements support cognitive health and the risk of brain aging and neurodegenerative conditions. Blueberries are also commonly used to help support weight loss thanks to their high fibreand low-calorie content, promoting satiety, as well as to help reduce belly fat. Finally, blueberry extract is a wonderful addition to one’s daily supplement regimen to help protect cardiovascular health by reducing blood pressure andlowering cholesterol.

Blueberry Supplements

Blueberries, of course, are available in their fresh berry form, as well as in dried form, and concentrated powder form that can be added to smoothies and shakes, yogurt, or your favourite recipe. Blueberries are also available as extracts in liquid and capsule form.

Final Thoughts

As in all things, no two blueberry supplements are created equal. In order to fully benefit from your supplement, look for one that is organic and that uses wild blueberries since they have a higherORAC value than regular blueberries. Also, make sure to select one that is non-GMO, and free from additives, fillers, soy, artificial colourings, flavourings, sugars, sweeteners, or stearates, for powerful, unadulterated antioxidant power.
