Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA):
CLA is a naturally occurring derivative of the Omega-6 essential fatty acid, linoleic acid, and a growing body of research indicates CLA may be effective as a supplement to weight loss efforts as it helps decrease both the size and the volume of fat cells. CLA is naturally found in a number of foods, but most specifically in beef, whole milk and butter.
Dietary sources of CLA however, are not likely to induce weight loss:
- In order to achieve the amount of CLA required for weight loss through diet alone, one would also have to consume a large number of calories (and other unhealthy fats) that promote weight gain.
- In addition, the amount of CLA in dairy products and meats has declined in recent years due to changes in rearing and feeding practices. This has led some to suggest that the lowered amounts of CLA in these foods may be contributing to the obesity epidemic.
The CLA research includes human trials as well as a number of high quality, controlled human studies showing that CLA can reduce body fat. These results have also been published in prestigious medical journals such as the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry 2001, Journal of Nutrition 2000, Lipids 2001 and the Journal of International Medical Research 2001.
While the studies show CLA can help with overall weight loss, Swedish research indicates that CLA also has the ability to specifically reduce abdominal fat in adults.
A particularly significant double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study with CLA, published in the International Journal of Obesity, found an average reduction of one inch to the waistlines of 25 men over a four week study period, with no cardiovascular risk or other side effects.
Research indicates that an effective adult dose for weight loss is 3,400mg of pure CLA daily (the amount found in 6 abs+ softgels). This is an important point for consumers because many formulas do not even come close to this effective level in a daily dose. Abs+ contains 2331mg of CLA per daily dose.
Green tea standardized to EGCG catechins:
Green tea has been used for centuries as a medicinal agent (and a delicious beverage). Recent scientific investigations have shown that green tea contains potent antioxidants, enhances immunity and is protective of the heart. The important natural chemicals in green tea which promote health and weight loss appear to be the polyphenols in particular a catechin called epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG that cannot be found in significant amounts in any other food sources.
Research indicates that green tea can safely enhance thermogenesis, increasing 24-hour energy expenditure. Simply put, it can increase calories burned through fat breakdown. Research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (1999)showed that green tea (containing 90mg of EGCG, or the amount found in 2 abs+ softgels) could lead to a 43% increase in thermogenesis in adults, an increase that could not be attributed to the caffeine in green tea. Additional research published in the International Journal of Obesity (2000) and Phytomedicine (2002)highlights the ability of green tea to increase the burning of fat as fuel and resulting human weight loss.
And green tea aids the effect of CLA on abdominal fat loss. A recent human study on the activity of green tea in moderately obese patients published in Phytomedicine, found a 4.5% decrease in waist circumference and a 4.6% decrease in body weight in just 12 weeks. When you combine this with the effects of the CLA, abs+ provides unsurpassed synergistic results. Abs+ contains 340mg of green tea extract per daily dose.
Why Not Get CLA from Food?
CLA occurs naturally in beef. But, beef unfortunately also contains a high amount of saturated "bad" fats. It may also contain harmful hormones and toxins from the environment. The CLA in Abs+ is derived from raw sunflower seeds.
