Heart diseases are usually as a result of dietary and lifestyle issues. The most important supplement for supporting heart health is a good high quality fish oil supplement. If someone has a heart condition such as cardiomyopathy or congestive heart failure, or high blood pressure they should use it. They should also consider utilizing Coenzyme Q10. Studies have shown that people with various heart diseases have an increased need for this valuable nutrient. It acts like a spark plug in our cells to give it more energy.
What is Coenzyme Q10?
It is a substance that we normally produce, but sometimes we don't produce enough. We need it to create energy. When we don't make enough, we don't create enough energy within our cells. That makes them more susceptible to damage. Low levels are seen in people with any sort of heart disease, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. Low levels are also linked to other degenerative diseases, particularly brain disorders like Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. It's gaining a lot of attention as an anti-aging nutrient. It is something that the body actually manufactures, but we need to take enough to bring it up to normal levels.
How does it work?
It works in our cells, specifically within our mitochondria, to help it produce energy. Without it, we wouldn't be able to produce any cellular energy, and that that would mean our cells would cease to function. It is necessary for the heart muscles to create energy. Without that energy, the heart muscles will not contract properly.
Who should use it?
It should be supplemented by anyone who is taking a statin drug to lower their cholesterol, anyone who has an existing cardiovascular condition, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or any sort of heart issue. It should also be used in anyone who is showing excessive aging, specifically if they're showing signs of senility or dementia. This would indicate that their brain is not producing sufficient levels of energy, as well as being protected. It may be able to help with both.
Recommended daily dosage
In general, for someone taking a statin drug, supplement with 100 milligrams twice a day.
What is the difference between Ubiquinol and Ubiquinone?
Coenzyme Q10 exists in 2 forms. One is an active form called ubiquinol and the other is an inactive form called ubiquinone. Our body has the ability to convert the ubiquinone into anubiquinol form. But there may be some situations where people would be better taking the ubiquinol form, particularly in people who have not responded to the ubiquinone form.
Are soft gels better than tablets or hard gel caps?
Take it in a soft gel form, and you take it with your largest meal, or with a large meal, particularly one that has an amount of fat in it so that you can better absorb it.
What are the benefits?
It can be very helpful in a variety of health conditions. Probably the most well documented benefits are in congested heart failure. Typically, what we see in these patients is an improved heart function. That can be measured clinically. It can also be experienced by the patient. What they will experience will be better tolerance to exercise, fewer bouts of shortness of breath and higher energy levels.
