Salmon oil contains EPA and DHA, two omega 3 essential fatty acids. EPA is an important fatty acid in the maintenance of cardiovascular health and the regulation of inflammation. EPA is a precursor to a series of chemicals whose job it is to regulate the inflammatory effects of arachidonic acid. Too much arachidonic acid leads to pain and inflammation in conditions such as arthritis. Arachidonic acid also causes inflammation in arteries and leads to the development of atherosclerotic plaques. Deficiency of EPA can result in cardiac arrhythmias, high cholesterol and excessive aging. EPA has been used to treat heart disease, arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. DHA is an essential component of the brain and central nervous system. It seems to concentrate in areas where there is lots of electrical activity such as the synaptosomes, where nerve cells communicate, and the photoreceptors of the eye. This is why a deficiency of DHA can result in poor brain development, attention/deficit hyperactivity disorder, learning disorders, memory problems and poor visual development. Fish oils may also offer protection against some forms of cancer.
Why are they Essential?
Omega-3s (and omega-6s) are termed essential fatty acids (EFAs) because they are critical for good health. However, the body cannot make them on its own. For this reason, omega-3s must be obtained from food, thus making outside sources of these fats "essential."
Although the body needs both omega-3s and omega-6s to thrive, most people consume far more 6s than 3s. Hardly a day goes by, however, without reports of another health benefit associated with omega-3s. For this reason, many experts recommend consuming a better balance these two EFAs.
Cholesterol is not all bad; it is the amount and the ratio of the various forms of cholesterol that are a health concern. LDL (low density lipoprotein) cholesterol is fat that is being transported from the liver for use by your cells. It is commonly called bad cholesterol. HDL (high density lipoprotein) cholesterol is called good cholesterol because it is fat that is being taken unused cholesterol from your cells back to the liver, where it is broken down. Cholesterol levels are unhealthy if you have lots of circulating LDL, not enough HDL or a combination of the two.
Recent studies suggest the omega-3 fatty acids found in Salmon oil can significanlty boost HDL ("the good cholesterol") production in the body. Of particular interest are EPA and DHAprimarily found in the oil of cold-water fish: salmon, bluefish, herring, mackerel, tuna, and the like. Studeis show they are capable of thinning blood and lowering blood fat and cholesterol levels. They may also help in the treatment of arthritis, allergic reactions, heart disease, and skin conditions.
What is Dietary Cholesterol?
Dietary cholesterol is different than the serum cholesterol mentioned above. Although eating foods that are high in cholesterol does raise serum cholesterol levels the liver is responsible for making cholesterol when needed. Thus a cholesterol reduction plan should include a low cholesterol diet with other treatments to help to reduce serum cholesterol. Genetics also plays a role in high cholesterol.
Diet and Lifestyle Connection
Dietary changes for high cholesterol include maintaining adequate fiber intake and lowering the fat and cholesterol content of your foods. Drink lots of clear fluids and eat raw fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Include green leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds, vegetable protein like soybeans and unrefined oils like olive, flax and sunflower in your daily diet. Foods to avoid are any margarine, hydrogenated oils, junk foods, fried foods, processed foods, fast foods, white flour products, white sugar products, red meat, egg yolks, ice cream, salt, coffee, colas and other caffeine sources. Eliminate alcohol, tobacco and highly spiced foods.
Use diet, exercise and supplements to maintain a healthy weight. Stress reduction techniques such as deep breathing, yoga or biofeedback will help to maintain a healthy Stress level.
