Quercetin
Bioflavinoids are essential for the absorption of vitamin C. The body cannot produce them; rather they must be taken in through the diet. They are called vitamin P because they regulate the Permeability of vessels and increase vessel strength. They are used to treat injuries because they repair damaged capillaries, which allows the body to restore proper blood flow to the area. Thus pain is relieved and bruising is minimized. They work with vitamin C to kill bacteria, increase circulation, stimulate bile flow, lower cholesterol, prevent cataracts and prevent herpes outbreaks.
There are many different types of bioflavinoids. Most bioflavinoid complexes contain some of the following bioflavinoids, citrin, flavones, hesperidin, quercetin and rutin. Rutin and hesperidin are bioflavinoids that are well studied for their effect on the vascular system. They can be used for minimizing bruising or treating conditions such as hemorrhoids or varicose veins because all of these conditions occur due to compromised veins and capillaries. Quercetin is a bioflavinoid that acts as an antioxidant, antihistamine and anti-inflammatory, in addition to its vascular effects. It stabilizes the membranes of mast cells. Mast cells release histamine when they come into contact with an allergen so that the body mounts an immune response. It is this immune response that is responsible for allergic symptoms such as runny nose and itchy watery eyes.
Cooking, heat, light, oxygen and pollutants, like cigarette smoke, destroy bioflavinoids.
Bioflavonoids
Also referred to as vitamin P, bioflavanoids work closely with vitamin C. The two are a particularly effective combination for supporting capillary health. Bioflavanoids help in strengthening and protecting collagen made from vitamin C, preventing capillary fragility. When our capillaries are described as fragile, easy bruising, bleeding gums and in severe cases hemorrhage can all be common.
Bioflavanoids are also well known for their antioxidant activity, preventing free radical damage and oxidation of LDL cholesterol, as well as increasing the anti-oxidant capacity of other nutrients. Bioflavanoids are showing great promise for use in the prevention and treatment of heart disease and cancer because of these anti-oxidant effects.
Specific bioflavanoids have affinities for specific organs and disease processes, like quercetin for the respiratory tract and conditions such as asthma and allergy, or milk thistle for liver support. Refer to the articles on these specific bioflavanoids for more information.
There are no known safety issues or upper limit in terms of dosage for bioflavanoids. Bioflavanoids are available in powder or capsule form and are often offered in combination products with a number of bioflavanoids together. They can be purchased separately, as well. Many green or multivitamin combinations will include a number of bioflavanoids for their anti-oxidant benefits.
