Oxidation is a natural process in the human body. Part of this process is the generation of free radicals, which are like little sparks that help to break down and eliminate waste products. But too much oxidation can generate too many free radicals, which can cause damage. This damage can compromise the immune system, and has also been associated with many chronic, degenerative diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease. These conditions are typically thought of as age-related, but are more likely linked with the cumulative effects of years of oxidation and free-radical damage. This can be caused by processed foods, tobacco, environmental pollutants, and other pro-oxidants to which we are regularly exposed.
The ACES:
Vitamin C is best known for strengthening the immune system. Studies have shown that 5 grams (5000 mg) of Vitamin C can double the rate of key activities of white blood cells, the soldiers of the immune system. Vitamin C also fights heart disease by assisting with cholesterol metabolism. The Vitamin C in Ester ACES is Ester-C. Most people consume Vitamin C in the form of ascorbic acid, but ascorbic acid passes out of the body quickly, so little of it is absorbed. It can also cause gassiness, bloating, and diarrhea.
Beta-Carotene (Pro-Vitamin A) Beta-carotene is a precursor to Vitamin A, and a carotenoid. Carotenoids are antioxidants that strengthen the cardiovascular and immune systems, and are essential to eye health. Population studies show that low carotenoid intake is a risk factor for many diseases.
Vitamin E, another antioxidant, has been proven beneficial against the three main killers in North America: heart disease, stroke, and cancer. Vitamin E inhibits oxidation, cholesterol build-up, and blood clotting, all of which contribute to heart disease. In one study, individuals with low Vitamin E levels had a 50 percent greater chance of developing cancer than individuals with high levels.
Selenium is an antioxidant trace mineral that works with Vitamin E. Numerous studies have linked low dietary selenium with increased deaths from many forms of cancer. Selenium may also help protect smokers from heart disease.
What is an Antioxidant?
Antioxidants are nutrients that help to protect your body from the damage caused by free radicals - the toxic molecules that play a role in the development of diseases from cataracts to heart disease, from arthritis to cancer. While our bodies produce some of these free radicals as the "garbage" from some its natural processes, we are now exposed to more and more of them from our environment than ever before.
The chemical pollution of our air and water now leave us exposed to very powerful free radicals that we have never been exposed to in the past. In combination with the nutrient depletion of our foods from modern chemical agriculture, we now also get less of the important nutrients from it that would normally help our immune systems fight these chemical invaders. This is why many nutritional doctors recommend their patients take supplements of antioxidants.
How Antioxidants Protect Your Cells:
When a free radical enters your body, it is attracted to the cells that make up the different tissues of it just like a magnet to metal. It then bonds to parts of the cell, which causes it to deteriorate in a way similar to that which oxygen causes metal to rust. If the cell gets damaged enough, it dies. Worse yet, if the cell DNA is damaged and then the cell reproduces, it reproduces abnormally as a result. When this happens to our skin, we get wrinkles; when it happens to our oxygen carrying blood vessels, we get hardening of the arteries; when it happens to our joints, we get arthritis; in some people -if it happens enough -they may even get cancer.
Antioxidants work by bonding with the free radical before it can bond to the cells of your body, thus neutralizing it. This now harmless substance is then deconstructed or merely excreted.
Common Disorders Caused By Oxidative Damage
Cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, cancer, wrinkles, premature aging, cardiovascular disease are all affected and exacerbated by oxidative damage to different parts of the body. It is now widely accepted even among mainstream practitioners that free radical damage is a major cause of these diseases.
