I was pleased to read what more collagen can do for me, because I have been taking it for 2 years now to improve my nails and strengthen my bones and joints. My nails are back to normal, thanks to collagen. And, although I can't see what it is doing to my bones and joints, the results of my latest bone density test were very positive! If it can also help with arthritis, then that is good to know as I get older.

Consumption of salmon collagen can lead to improved joint support as well as relief from joint pain caused by osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis when used regularly over time. I confirm this statement as I am currently taking salmon collagen for skin health and joint health at the same time. It is useful for Arthritis and Joint Health. Collagen is used for the initial treatment of arthritis for its anti-inflammatory and cartilage repair abilities. I use it for Bone Health as well. Collagen is the main organic component of our bones. It is one of the basic protein building blocks that serve to give bone its structure.

Hello Rachel,
Thank you, we're glad you enjoyed this guide. While collagen supplements have risen in popularity, a lot of people aren't aware of the intricate balance between the varying types of collagen and why that ratio is important. It's something to keep in mind when shopping for these supplements.

Have a healthy day

I really liked this guide to collagen. My favorite part was where you delineate what the different types of collagen are. Before I read your article, I did not know much at all about type IV collagen (a minor collagen, if I remember correctly, though no collagen are truly minor for health!). I did not realize that type IV collagen makes up the vast majority of the basement membrane and thus forms the main connections between the bases of the cells of the tissues. Also, I didn't realize that a full 50% of collagen protein is type II. Thank you for the great article!

Hello, RoseWithThorns,

There are 3 types of collagen that our body naturally produces in a specific ratio. If you are taking a collagen supplement then it is important for that supplement to also contain the 3 types in the optimal ratio. You can also use plant-based collagen-boosting supplements like Silicea which keeps your natural collagen production boosted. You can check it out here:

There are so many different types of collagen, I am currently taking a collagen supplement but because I don't eat meat or meat products I am taking a marine collagen product and I am now concerned that it may not be providing me with all of the types of collagen that would be beneficial for me. Unfortunately I have not found any good vegan/vegetarian or non-animal collagen's out there that can do the same job as bovine derived ones.
