Hello Rachel,
Thank you for enjoying our article and leaving such a thoughtful comment filled with inquiry. Flushing from niacin often occurs from dilating blood vessels, which increases blood flow and causes the skin to redden or darken. The dilation of blood vessels may occur due to how niacin reacts with certain proteins within the skin, causing an increase in prostaglandins and the blood vessels to dilate. We think you'll also enjoy this article on Niacin, which may answer more questions you were curious about, https://www.nationalnutrition.ca/articles/supplements/niacin-vitamin-b-3/

I know this is probably my problem/not a common thing to have difficulty understanding but I did not know what was meant by the issue with "flushing"-even though I know what it means for someone to be flushed!!!: Specifically, I was unsure if instead of skin flushing, "flushing" refered to a certain health condition related to excretion or bodily transport or a medical term. So, I had to look this up on the internet. Anyway, great article and I did not know that niacin could cause flushing: it would have been interesting if you shared why this occurs, if the mechanism is known.

My husband has used no- flush Niacin for his workout improvement for years, without the severe flushing prickling going all red effect of Niacin which is so uncomfortable. I have tried Niacin in both forms years ago and decided I did not need an isolated B vitamin unless I had very definite signals of deficiency so chose to stay with B Complex or Bio-Strath. My husband sees that he gets better results during workouts with more efficient blood flow and circulation using even the non-flush Niacin.
