Discover the Healing Power of Aloe Vera Supplements

Aloe is a succulent plant and one of approximately 420 species of Aloe originating from the Arabian Peninsula. It is widely distributed throughout many world regions. Aloe vera is the most well-known Aloe species, also called "true" or "medicinal Aloe." Aloe plants typically have thick, fleshy leaves filled with a gel-like substance known for its robust medicinal and cosmetic benefits. This is why it has been usead for centuries in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical and food industries. While you may know aloe as a topical remedy for burns, there are also food-grade supplements that have multiple health benefits.

Aloe vera may be purchased as a fresh leaf in health food stores and produce markets, in gel or juice form extracted from the inner part of the aloe plant leaf, as well as in capsules. The intended use will dictate the form you should use.

One important thing to note about Aloe is that the inner lining of its leaves contains latex – a substance that can cause problems in certain individuals. Indeed, aloe latex contains compounds called anthraquinones, such as aloin, which can have significant laxative effects. While this can be beneficial for those struggling with constipation, an excessive intake of aloe latex can cause abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and myriad other gastrointestinal discomforts. In fact, prolonged or excessive use of aloe latex as a laxative can result in excessive fluid loss, dehydration, and disturbances in electrolyte balance.

Key Health Benefits of Aloe Vera Supplements

Ideal Candidates for Aloe Vera Supplement Use

Aloe vera gel is terrific in topical use, whether as a moisturizer, lotion, or cream, to help nourish and hydrate hair and skin, as well as to soothe minor cuts, burns, sunburns, eczema, psoriasis, and all sorts of skin irritations. In oral supplement form, Aloe vera is typically recommended as a tonic to aid digestion, relieve constipation, support the immune system, and bolster anti-inflammatory defences. Studies have also found that Aloe vera supplementation may effectively balance blood sugar.

Important Considerations for Using Aloe Vera Supplements

Aloe vera, whether used topically or internally, offers numerous advantages. Select only pure, high-quality Aloe vera from reputable brands without added sugars or artificial ingredients to ensure you fully benefit from your Aloe very supplement, juice, or gel. Ideally, you should start with a small amount when using Aloe vera orally to monitor for any potential allergies or sensitivities.

Aloe latex allergy may manifest as mild skin irritations, hives, swelling, and even difficulty breathing. If you experience any allergic reactions after using aloe latex, discontinue use and consult your health care provider.

It’s also important to note that aloe latex may reduce the effectiveness or potentiate the side effects of certain medications, including diuretics, antiarrhythmics, and corticosteroids.
