Stevia -An In-depth Look at Stevia and Its Origins
As far as alternative sweeteners go, stevia is very well-known, which is why it's found in many products from baked goods, protein bars and nutritional supplements. For those who aren't familiar with stevia, it is a natural sweetener and sugar substitute that’s derived from the leaves of the Stevia rebaudiana plant that belongs to the Asteraceae family, native to Brazil and Paraguay.
Stevia contains unique compounds called steviol glycosides (including steviosides and rebaudiosides), which are 200 to 450 times sweeter than sugar, are heat-stable, pH-stable and not fermentable. This means stevia extract can naturally add sweetness to recipes without contributing any calories (or carbs) because the body cannot metabolize it. From a flavour standpoint, it has a slower onset and longer duration than sugar, and some people describe a distinct flavour reminiscent of licorice, while others point to a distinct bitter aftertaste. It is a great alternative to sweetening baked goods, coffee, or tea and can be added to smoothies and shakes and whatever else needs a little added sweetness.
Interestingly, beyond its wide use as a sugar alternative, stevia extract has been shown to possess antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, hypotensive, antiseptic, diuretic, and cardiotonic properties, which multiply its advantages to health.

Using Stevia: Making Your Sweetener Work Best
Stevia leaf extract is widely available online or at most local grocery stores in powdered and liquid forms. It is also available in many flavours like natural, hazelnut, french vanilla, chocolate and lemon. You should look for a stevia extract that doesn't contain additives like sorbitol, lactose (milk sugar), carboxymethyl cellulose, isomaltose, erythritol, sodium hydrogen carbonate, or dextrose. Instead, make sure the stevia you choose is certified organic, non-GMO and that it's made with steviol glycosides which is standardized to at least 95% for optimal taste, without too much bitterness.
