Cysteine Supplements

Did you know that the amino acid – L-Cysteine – can boost liver detoxification, enhance antioxidant potential and offers impressive anti-aging properties?

Cysteine (or L-Cysteine) is classified as a “conditionally-essential” amino acid because it can be synthesized in small amounts inside your body. However, it is essential to overall health for several reasons. First, it is an important component of hair, nails and keratin in the skin. It is also responsible for stabilizing protein structure and stimulating the formation of collagen, making it critical for healthy skin, hair and nails. Along with glutamine and glycine, this amino acid is a building block of glutathione, the body’s MASTER antioxidant. Glutathione works in your liver to transform chemicals and metabolic by-products into harmless substances for excretion from the body. Therefore, taking this supplement supports the natural detoxification mechanisms of the body (especially useful to help prevent side effects caused by hepatotoxic medications and toxic chemicals, and exposure to formaldehyde, a by-product of alcohol metabolism). This amino also enhances your antioxidant capacity, helps slow down the aging process, and boosts your immunological function.

N-acetyl cysteine (or NAC), another widely available supplement, is an acetylated variant and precursor of L-cysteine. While the latter is found in food, NAC is not; it is only available in supplement form. NAC has many of the same clinical applications as L-Cysteine, in addition to a few others. NAC is also recommended to boost brain health, balance mood, support symptoms of respiratory conditions, and balance healthy blood sugar.

Benefits of Cysteine

  • Enhances Antioxidant Protection
  • Promotes Liver Detoxification
  • Stimulates Collagen Production (for Hair, Skin, and Nail Health)

Who Needs This Amino Acid?

Cysteine/NAC is recommended to increase Glutathione levels in the body, enhance the body’s antioxidant potential and for liver detoxification. Because various health conditions can deplete your glutathione levels, L-cysteine supplementation can be an ideal solution to stimulate production inside the body. Cysteine/NAC is also commonly recommended as an anti-aging supplement to boost collagen production and support healthy hair, skin, and nails.

Cysteine Supplements

Supplement Potencies

The standard dose of L-cysteine is typically around 500mg daily. Always follow label instructions.

Supplement Forms

This amino is most commonly available as NAC, although L-cysteine hydrochloride supplements are also available. NAC is thought to offer better bioavailability than L-cysteine hydrochloride, potentially due to its greater water solubility.

Supplement Formats

L-cysteine and NAC are available in capsule and powder form. They are also often added to protein powders, including whey and plant-based proteins.

For increased antioxidant protection, consider taking vitamin c as well. This will also enhance collagen production for healthy hair, skin, nails and joints.

Final Thoughts on Cysteine

This supplement is considered safe, with few possible side effects, though there is no data available on long-term use. Speak to your health care practitioner before taking this amino if you are already on medications for blood pressure or any other drug that suppresses the immune system, as this may increase the potency of these medications. This supplement is not suitable during pregnancy or lactation.
