Glutathione Benefits

Have you heard of the MASTER OF ALL ANTIOXIDANTS? If not, read on to discover GLUTATHIONE and the many health benefits it offers.

GLUTATHIONE, the most important antioxidant in the body, is a sulfur based peptide consisting of three amino acids: cysteine, glycine and glutamic acid. Not only is it present inside the cell, but it’s also produced by every cell in your body – hence it's of paramount importance to overall health and longevity. Glutathione is also central to liver detoxification and is responsible for neutralizing toxins, chemicals and metabolic byproducts for excretion from the body. Glutathione is also essential to a strong immune system. While the body can make glutathione and deficiency is reportedly rare, recent research seems to indicate otherwise. Glutathione synthetase deficiency (a genetic metabolic disorder that affects the body’s ability to produce glutathione) seems more prevalent than originally thought. Some of the most common signs of deficiency include anemia, metabolic acidosis, frequent infections, and brain-related symptoms like seizures, intellectual disability and ataxia.

Benefits of Glutathione

Who Needs Glutathione?

Natural health care practitioners will often recommend glutathione as an anti-aging supplement, weakened immunity, to maintain optimal cognitive health, for chronic GI conditions, heart and vision health and liver support.

Glutathione Supplement Benefits

Glutathione supplements are available either as an encapsulated powder or in liquid liposomal form. However, the body’s ability to absorb glutathione in the intestinal tract is somewhat controversial, so liposomal glutathione may be a better option than capsules. Liposomal delivery bypasses proteolytic degradation in the GI tract, so helps overcome any potential absorption challenges.

The dosage for glutathione will typically be within the 500-3000mg daily range. Of course, this will be a function of the condition or symptoms you’re trying to address. Clinical doses may be higher, as recommended by your natural health care practitioner.

If taking Glutathione for liver support, consider taking it alone with Milk Thistle for enhanced detoxifying benefits.

For immune support, pairing Glutathione with vitamin C is beneficial to provide a well-rounded boost.

Final Thoughts

Glutathione must be reduced to be metabolically active, so make sure the label of the product you select clearly states “reduced”. For conditions affecting the respiratory system; asthma, bronchitis, and emphysema, naturopaths often prefer to administer glutathione directly via inhalation rather than orally. Be sure to discuss this with your health care practitioner as needed. Some side effects may include, cramping and bloating, or allergic reaction (skin rash).
