Astaxanthin

Did you know that astaxanthin is considered one of the most potent naturally occurring carotenoids and antioxidants? In fact, astaxanthin has been shown to fight free radicals 6,000 times more efficiently than vitamin C, 550 times more efficiently than vitamin E and 40 times more efficiently than beta-carotene.

It is produced either by Haematococcus pluvialis, Chlorella zofingiensis, or Chlorococcum, three forms of microalgae, as well as by the yeast Phaffia rhodozyma. It is the natural pigment that imparts foods such as krill, algae, salmon, and lobster with their bright red/orange colour. Interestingly, astaxanthin is also what colours flamingos bright pink.

As a supplement, astaxanthin offers a wealth of health benefits, including helping to protect against free radical damage and the development of chronic disease, inflammation modulation, as well as helps to preserve skin health and integrity. It is also reputed to help enhance endurance, optimize athletic performance, as well as to help prevent exercise-induced joint pain.

Benefits of Astaxanthin

  • Helps Protect Cognitive Health
  • Protects Eyes and Vision
  • Balances Cholesterol Levels
  • Supports Healthy Blood Pressure

Who Needs Astaxanthin

Because astaxanthin can cross the blood-brain barrier, it is often used to prevent free radical damage to the brain, as well as to temper inflammation. This helps preserve brain function and prevents the accumulation of beta-amyloid plaque, and may help the subsequent development of neurodegenerative conditions. These supplements are also frequently recommended to enhance blood flow, increase circulation, protect cardiovascular health, prevent atherosclerosis, reduce cholesterol levels, bolster immunity, and maintain a healthy blood sugar balance.

Astaxanthin Supplements

Potencies

These supplements come in a range of potencies and are typically recommended in the 4-12 mg dose range.

Formats

Astaxanthin supplements are primarily available in capsules and softgels. It is also frequently added to omega-3 fatty acid supplements, as well as vitamin D3 capsules and liquids.

Final Thoughts

Astaxanthin is often combined with other potent carotenoid antioxidants, lutein and zeaxanthin, to enhance antioxidant protection. Because astaxanthin (like lutein and zeaxanthin) is a fat-soluble nutrient, look for a supplement that is provided in a fat-soluble base such as coconut oil, olive oil, MCT oil, and others for best absorption.
