These oils are concentrated aromatic plant extracts carefully obtained through steam distillation, mechanical cold pressing or resin tapping. The oils capture the plant's scent, flavour, or "essence." Each unique aromatic compound imparts essential oil with its characteristic essence and therapeutic properties. Hundreds of different aromatherapy oils exist, most of which are not certified organic, so it's difficult to assess their purity, quality, and safety. Many others aren't third-party tested, so it’s impossible to ascertain the presence of potential contaminants. Maximizing Benefits: How to Use Aromatherapy Oils Effectively
Organic essential oils can be used in a variety of ways, such as applied to the skin, inhaled, or ingested. The application method chosen depends on the desired effect and the essential oil selected. For example, some essential oils are irritating to the skin because of their chemistry. These would need more dilution in a carrier oil such as coconut or sweet almond oil or might be better suited for use in a steam diffuser. Some general guidelines when using essential oils:
- Topical applications are ideal for skin care and wound care
- Mood enhancement can be achieved with either inhalation or topical application. For fast action, inhalation might be preferred.
- Adding essential oils to your bath provides both inhalation and topical absorption and can help ease sore muscles and other aches and pains. Baths are also a great way to promote mood balance and relaxation.
