Cinnamon Oil Benefits
Did you know that four countries account for 98% of the world's production of cinnamon? These are Indonesia, China, Vietnam, and Sri Lanka, and they produce a whopping 222,122 metric tonnes of cinnamon a year! Most people know cinnamon as a spice used in a wide range of culinary applications, including sweet and savoury dishes, pancakes, breakfast cereals, snack foods, and teas, thanks to its sweet and woody flavour, slight citrusy notes, and spicy taste reminiscent of cloves. Unlike the delicious and decadent spice, cinnamon essential oil is far more potent, thanks to its unique chemical composition, making it ideal for use in various medicinal applications.
This oil is derived from the bark of several types of trees, including the Cinnamomum verum tree and the Cinnamomum cassia tree. The majority of cinnamon oils on the market are derived from Cinnamomum cassia and marketed as "Cassia cinnamon," though oils derived from Cinnamomum verum, which is significantly more expensive and marketed as "Ceylon cinnamon," are also available.
Cinnamon oil has a lush fragrance that may best be described as peppery, earthy, spicy, bright, and slightly woodsy. It has long been a staple of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
Benefits of Cinnamon Essential Oil
- Decreases Inflammation
- Helps Maintain a Healthy Immune System When Inhaled
- Encourages Healthy Blood Sugar Balance When Applied Topically or Inhaled
- Reduces Cholesterol
- Stimulates Immunity
- Supports Healthy Metabolic Function
Therapeutic Properties of Cinnamon Essential Oil
Cinnamon oil packs quite a medicinal punch thanks to its powerful antibacterial, antifungal, antidiabetic, antioxidant, and thermogenic properties. It's often recommended to help reduce blood sugar thanks to its effects on insulin release, which keep glycemia in check and help tame associated symptoms such as fatigue, moodiness, sugar cravings, overeating, and weight gain. Cinnamon oil is also fantastic for promoting heart health by helping lower both total and LDL "bad" cholesterol while raising HDL "good" cholesterol. Other exciting uses for cinnamon include soothing sore throats, fighting fungal infections and parasites, and relieving symptoms of depression and anxiety.
Using Cinnamon In Aromatherapy
- Unlike many other essential oils, cinnamon can be used internally.
- Food grade oils can be added to a veggie cap to boost immune function.
- It can be added to hot water or tea and sipped throughout the day to soothe an irritated throat, a cold, or the flu.
- It can also be added to all DIY skincare recipes to bolster skin health and fight infections, bacteria, inflammation, swelling, redness, etc.
- Cinnamon oil may also be diluted with water in a spray bottle and used as a fragrant cleaning spray and air freshener.
Please note, essential oils for aromatherapy are not to be ingested, only food grade oils made for culinary purposes can be taken internally.
