What Is Grape Seed Essential Oil?

Grape seed oil, as its name implies, is a vegetable oil made from the pressed seeds of grapes as a by-product of wine production. When labelled as food-grade, this is an edible oil that, thanks to its high smoke point (roughly 216 °C/421 °F), is ideally suited to searing meats and vegetables, sauteing, stir-frying, and pan-frying. However, grape seed oil made for aromatherapy purposes should not be ingested. 

Grapeseed oil is rich in phenolic antioxidants and is high in omega-6 fatty acids and vitamin E. This explains why it is extensively used in skin care, including all face, body, and hair applications. Moreover, grape seed oil’s chemical composition makes it a fantastic addition to the diet to protect the body’s cells from free radical damage, boost immunity, and promote optimal eye health. 

Of course, grape seed oil is also a first-rate carrier oil and is frequently used in aromatherapy as a moisturizing and hydrating oil. Unlike many other carrier oils, grape seed oil is lightweight, does not clog pores—an appreciable quality for those with oily skin—and is ideally suited to sensitive skin.

Using Grape Seed Essential Oil 

Grape seed oil tends to be on the expensive side. Also, most commercially available grape seed oil is made using chemical solvents such as hexane, which is not only a pollutant but a neurotoxin. Adding insult to injury is the fact that many commercial grape seed oils are heated to very high temperatures during manufacturing, which denatures and may oxidize the oil. If you want to try grape seed oil, look for one that's either cold-pressed or expeller-pressed and clearly states it does not use chemical solvents or high heat.
