Essential oils stimulate smell receptors in the nose, send messages through the nervous system to the limbic system, and affect the amygdala, the brain's integrative center responsible for emotions, emotional behaviour, and motivation.
You can purchase aromatherapy oils individually – i.e. one plant extract at a time – or in combination aromatherapy blends geared towards various general indications (stress relief, mood enhancer, focus and concentration, respiratory support, etc.) Since combination oils do not require advanced knowledge of individual oils, their indications, and how to combine them for optimal efficacy, they're ideally suited to beginners. While individual essential oils are the preferred choice for those with a more advanced understanding of aromatherapy, who know how to safely combine them for optimal effectiveness.

How to Use Single Essential Oils for Aromatherapy
Essential oils are highly potent, and many are inappropriate for use "as is." Rather, they must be diluted in a carrier oil, such as coconut, olive, or sweet almond oil, before applying them to the skin. Certain aromatherapy oils can cause side effects when used either undiluted or in too large a quantity. Some of the most common side effects include:
- Irritation and burning
- Asthma symptoms
- Headaches
While select essential oils can safely be used internally, the majority should only be used externally. If you aren't well versed in aromatherapy, you should consult a knowledgeable aromatherapist or other health care practitioner for advice on mixing, blending, and using individual aromatherapy oils. This will also ensure you derive the most benefit from your essential oils.
