What Is Marjoram Essential Oil?

Marjoram (Origanum majorana) is a perennial herb belonging to the same plant family as oregano, both of which are widely known as cooking spices. Origanum plants are native to the Mediterranean, North Africa, and western Asia, and were said to be cultivated by the ancient Romans and Greeks and especially favoured by Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love. This explains why marjoram and it’s oil was used to make love potions in ancient Greece.

Beyond its culinary applications, the marjoram plant is also used to make essential oil, a much more concentrated version of the herb. Aromatically, marjoram oil is herbaceous, mild, and sweet, with minty and woody notes. It blends well with many other essential oils, including but not limited to lavender, clary sage, rose, neroli, grapefruit, and many others.

This oil offers robust health benefits thanks to its many scientifically demonstrated medicinal properties, including antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant effects. Additional pharmacologic effects of marjoram oil include being spasmolytic (soothes cramps and spasms) and carminative (relieves gas and flatulence).

Benefits Of Marjoram Essential Oil

Therapeutic Properties of Marjoram Essential Oil

This oil is versatile and terrific for soothing aches and pains, digestive and respiratory complaints, and relieving mood-based symptoms, including those associated with stress, anxiety, and grief. When used via inhalation, marjoram essential oil has been shown to calm the nervous system and, as a vasodilator, promote cardiovascular health by improving blood flow and lowering blood pressure. Because of its potent antioxidant activity, marjoram oil can help prevent free radical damage throughout the body. Also noteworthy is that marjoram's scent (diffused into the air) can stimulate the salivary glands and promote healthy digestion.

And research shows that marjoram is also gastroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and an effective hormone balancer.

Using Essential Oils

You can use this oil in topical applications by adding a few drops to a carrier oil such as jojoba, sweet almond, coconut, avocado oil, or another carrier oil and using it in massage to soothe sore and aching muscles. It can also be added to moisturizing creams and lotions to relieve dry skin and improve complexion, and it can also be incorporated into all sorts of DIY aromatherapy recipes. Alternately, marjoram oil can be used in a diffuser to freshen the air and calm the nervous system, or added to water and spritzed to deodorize and liven up carpets, sofas, and linens.
