Pennyroyal has been used since ancient Greek, Roman, and medieval cultures. Pennyroyal oil has a strong, fresh, minty, herbaceous scent similar to spearmint and was used for centuries to flavour food, wine, and teas.

In the nineteenth century, the pennyroyal plant was said to have been used to induce perspiration at the start of a cold coming on and other infections. It was also said to be used for nausea and nervous conditions, as well as for soothing headaches and easing menstrual cramps and pain. There is also a record of ancient American Indians using the pennyroyal plant as a topical wash to treat skin eruptions, rashes, and itching.

Therapeutic Properties of Pennyroyal Essential Oil
Pennyroyal oil may be recommended in the diffused form to help ease symptoms of the common cold, pneumonia, fatigue, etc. It can also be used to prevent the growth of several species of pathogenic and spoilage bacteria and to deter pests, including ticks, fleas, gnats, and mosquitoes.
This oil has carminative (relieving flatulence), diaphoretic (inducing sweating), stimulant, emmenagogic (stimulating menses), repelling, and stimulating properties, so it can be beneficial in all associated conditions. It can also be used to treat spasms, colds and flu, stomach pain, and indigestion when mixed with carrier oil and applied topically.
Using Essential Oils
Pennyroyal oil is used in diffusers in aromatherapy and makes an effective insect repellent, but it should never be taken internally. It should never be applied to the skin, even diluted in carrier oil. Pennyroyal oil should also not be used as a natural flea repellent due to its toxicity to pets, even in extremely low amounts. If you're going to use pennyroyal in the home to prevent or treat pest infestations, ensure your domestic animals cannot come into contact with the oil.
