Rosehip Oil Benefits

Rosehip oil (also called rosehip seed oil) is extracted from the seeds of rose hips, which are the accessory fruit of the rose plant and are left behind after the plant has flowered and dropped its petals. The rose plant is native to many regions around the world. They can be found on the eastern and western coasts

Rose hips were said to have been prized by the ancient Egyptians, Mayans, and Native Americans thanks to their exceptional healing properties, which can be attributed to their rich fatty acid composition. Indeed, rosehips are made up of approximately 6% saturated fat, 13% oleic acid (omega-9 fatty acid), 43% linoleic acid (omega-6 essential fatty acid), and 36% alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3 essential fatty acid), along with ample amounts of antioxidant carotenoids and vitamins A, C, E, and F. This unique nutritional composition is what imparts rosehip oil with its considerable medicinal properties.

Rosehip oil has a rich, herbaceous, slightly sweet, earthy, floral scent that evokes autumn. Interestingly, rosehip oil smells nothing like roses, which is often a surprise to first-time users!

Benefits of Rosehip Oil

  • Anti-aging Effects
  • Helps Protect Against & Fade Age Spots
  • Promotes Skin Regeneration – Fades Acne Scars & Stretch Marks
  • Protects Against Sun Damage
  • Reduces Skin Inflammation (Including Eczema)

Therapeutic Properties of Rosehip Oil

Rosehip oil is known to promote skin health. It is often recommended to help boost collagen production, improve skin elasticity, and stimulate cell regeneration. It can also be used to treat burns, sunburns, wrinkles, stretch marks, and eczema, and is fantastic for fading fine lines, wrinkles around the eyes and outer mouth, and age spots. This oil can be used as a face oil to nourish the skin and illuminate the complexion, as well as added to your regular skincare products like creams, lotions, and moisturizers to multiply skin benefits. Rosehip oil leaves a hint of oil on the skin, which makes it feel velvety soft (never greasy).

Using Essential Oils

While rosehip oil is a staple of aromatherapy, it is not a true essential oil since it is extracted by cold pressing. Indeed, this oil is, more precisely, a carrier or base oil, which can be used as a standalone product by itself as well as serve to dilute more concentrated essential oils so they can safely be applied to the skin.

Rosehip oil side effects are rare but can occasionally manifest. These include:

  • Rash or Hives
  • Difficulty Breathing
  • Rapid Heartbeat
  • Dizziness
  • Congestion
  • Itchy, Watery Eyes
  • Wheezing
  • And, rarely, anaphylaxis

If you experience any of these, discontinue use.
