What Are Tissue Salts & How Do You Use Them?
Tissue salts, also known as Shussler salts, are low-dose mineral remedies derived from the 12 essential minerals naturally present in your body's cells. Maintaining a balanced level of these salts is crucial for overall health. When imbalances occur, tissue salts help restore wellness by correcting mineral deficiencies and supporting the body's natural healing.
Principles Of Tissue Salt Therapy (Biochemical Healing)
Dr. Wilhelm Heinrich Schuessler, a German medical doctor, initially developed tissue salts. They are based on his Biochemic Theory (or Biochemic Cell Salt Theory). Which is a system of medicine that aims to restore the balance of mineral salts in the body.
The premise of Dr Schuessler’s theory of healing states that tissue salts have specific therapeutic uses for a variety of conditions, from minor ailments to chronic diseases. They address the root cause of illness, not just symptoms. While they are often safe for all ages and can be used alongside other treatments, always speak with your healthcare provider first. Tissue salts can be taken orally, under the tongue, or topically.
Typically, tissue salts come as small lactose-based tablets or pellets, which should be taken sublingually for optimal absorption.
Tissue Salt Therapy Vs Homeopathy
Tissue salt therapy and homeopathy share some similarities but are distinct. Both rely on the principle of "like cures like" and use highly diluted substances, applying the "minimum dose" concept: small doses stimulate, moderate doses support, and large doses suppress.
Homeopathy
Developed in the 18th century by Samuel Hahnemann, it uses extreme dilutions of substances to trigger the body's natural healing, addressing both physical and mental symptoms.
Tissue Salt Therapy
Emerging in the late 19th century, it uses mineral compounds to restore cellular balance. Though also diluted, tissue salts retain measurable amounts of the original minerals. While homeopathy draws on a wide range of substances, tissue salts are solely based on minerals found naturally in the body.

Traditional Tissue Salt Combinations
Traditional tissue salt combinations are blends of individual salts, each targeting specific conditions. Each combination is designed for a specific organ system or overall wellness.
Learn How To Use These Salts
Learn how to use tissue salts:
- Identify the salts you need. If new, consult a homeopath or natural health practitioner.
- Follow the recommended dose, typically 1-2 tablets sublingually, 3-4 times daily or as advised by a practitioner or product label.
- Take them away from food and strong flavours (like coffee or toothpaste) to ensure proper absorption.
- Track your progress; note any changes in symptoms and adjust as needed, staying consistent.
- Store them in a cool, dry place, away from heat, sunlight, strong odours, and electronics.
- They are generally safe during pregnancy, breastfeeding and for children. For kids under 100 pounds, use half the adult dose, crushing the tablets if needed.
