Beeswax Candles: Pure & Healthy Candles
Did you know that candles have been used as a light source and in celebration for over 5,000 years? While there is no documentation on the candle’s precise origin, the earliest recorded use of candles goes back to the Ancient Egyptians, who used them to make rushlights and torches. Candles are still widely used today, and their popularity is rising. According to Market Data Forecast, the global candle market was worth $7,562.83 million in 2021 and is expected to grow to $10,156.05 million by 2027. These numbers apply to all candles, including those made from beeswax.
What Is Beeswax?
Before we delve into these candles and their numerous advantages, it’s probably wise to start by looking at beeswax itself.
Beeswax is produced by honey bees, which use the substance to build their hive. They use it to make those hexagon-shaped honey cells (honeycombs) that store their honey and pollen and house their larvae. Indeed, specialized glands on the abdomen of worker bees secrete this unique wax, which is composed of roughly 300 active compounds, including long-chain alkanes, acids, esters, polyesters, and hydroxy esters. The exact composition of the beeswax will vary depending on the region and the type of flowers gathered by the bees, all of which dictate the colour and aroma of the beeswax.
This compound has long been a staple of natural and complementary medicine and is also extensively used in candle making.
Beeswax Candles vs Paraffin Candles
Unlike most conventionally available candles, beeswax is a natural, renewable resource that does not contribute to air pollution. It also has a high melting point (approximately 149° Fahrenheit); therefore, candles made from this substance emit a warm-toned flame that is both soothing and calming and very similar to sunlight. Beeswax candles also happen to burn stronger and brighter than paraffin candles, and they can burn three times longer while dripping less (or not at all), so you get a lot more bang for your buck with these candles. Moreover, this type of candle burns cleanly with little smoke if adequately trimmed. Beeswax lends itself equally well to votives, pillars, container candles, etc.
Benefits of Using Beeswax Candles
- 100% Pure (No Chemical Processing)
- Cleanest, Brightest, And Longest Burning
- Drip-Free
- Naturally Purifies The Air
- Subtle Honey-Like Scent
Embracing Beeswax Candles: Final Reflections on Their Impact
Beeswax is a natural by-product of the beekeeping industry. As such, when you purchase natural beeswax candles, you're not only supporting beekeepers, but you're also helping to protect the environment.
If you’re looking for the best quality beeswax candles, look for solid, hand-poured candles rather than the rolled honeycomb. Also, ensure the wicks are 100% cotton.
