Also known as retinyl palmitate, vitamin A is commonly referred to as the "skin vitamin". Although vitamin A is an antioxidant, it is best know for its cellular renewal properties that speed up exfoliation to reveal younger, plumper skin cells. Through the process of cell renewal and exfoliation, vitamin A helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and skin irregularities.

Naturally present in the skin, vitamin E has been used in clinical dermatology as a treatment for a variety of skin conditions including eczema, atopic dermatitis, superficial burns, cutaneous ulcers, and other inflammatory skin diseases (Panin, Strumia, and Ursini, 2004). As a topical treatment, vitamin E helps moisturize the skin and optimize skin health. One function of the epidermis is called the barrier function. Our skin has a natural barrier, a waterproof seal that keeps moisture in the skin and prevents evaporation. Both the natural aging process and environmental influences cause the barrier to break down, allowing skin to lose moisture and become dry. Vitamin E helps to restore and maintain the barrier function, locking moisture into the skin and preventing dehydration. Topically applied vitamin E is an excellent and intense moisturizer to help keep skin healthy and soft.

Vitamin E can treat many conditions including infertility, PMS, fibrocystic breasts, anemia, Alzheimer's disease and atherosclerosis.Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant vitamin. It is well known for the prevention of cardiovascular disease because it decreases platelet aggregation, thus allowing the blood to flow more freely and bring oxygen to the tissues more easily. As an antioxidant it protects the cell from damage and prevents the oxidation of other fat-soluble vitamins and nutrients. It does this by neutralizing free radicals.

Vitamin E is believed to be an anti-aging vitamin because as an antioxidant it protects the body against environmental pollutants other substances that and lead to aging. There are 2 families of compounds that make up vitamin E, the tocopherols and tocotrienols. Each group has different forms that are named by the Greek letters alpha, beta, gamma and delta. The most active form is the naturally sourced d-alpha-tocopherol. It works best when a combination of the other compounds is taken along with it. Synthetic vitamin E is labeled dl-alpha-tocopherol. Although it is less expensive it is significantly less active in the body. Vitamin E is available in an oil or water (dry) base. The water-based supplement is beneficial for those who cannot digest fats, for example those with gallbladder dysfunction, and those whose conditions are aggravated by fats, for example acne sufferers.

Heat, oxygen, freezing, food processing and chlorine damage Vitamin E. Mineral oil impedes the absorption of vitamin E. Vitamin E should be taken away from inorganic iron supplements, like ferrous sulphate.
