WHAT IS CAPRYLIC ACID?
Caprylic acid (also known as octanoic acid), is a saturated fatty acid that is naturally found in the milk of various mammals and is also one of the main fatty acids in coconut oil. As a medium-chain triglyceride (MCT), caprylic acid has well-documented anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal properties and is widely used to prevent urinary tract and bladder infections, sexually transmitted diseases, oral infections such as gingivitis, and most notably, candidiasis, a fungal infection caused by a yeast (a type of fungus) called Candida. Candidiasis (often simply referred to as Candida) is extremely common, especially among women, and can manifest as extreme fatigue, abdominal bloating, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), sugar cravings, oral thrush, recurring genital, or urinary tract infections (UTIs), sinus infections, recurrent skin and nail fungal infections, and joint pain.
Caprylic acid also plays a key role in the body's regulation of energy, a function that involves the hormone ghrelin, a hormone produced in the gastrointestinal tract, which is often referred to as the "hunger hormone" because of its implication in food intake. Generally speaking, health care professionals recommend a dose in the range of 500 to 1000 mg, 3X daily. For Candida, caprylic acid is usually recommended in the 1 - 2 g dose range, to be taken 3X daily 30 minutes before a meal.
