This plant grows in the heat of South Western African deserts and grasslands. Devil's Claw has been used medicinally by African tribes, primarily for treating arthritic conditions. The unique name of this plant is derived from the large, hooked, claw-like fruit that it grows, which has also been known to ensnare livestock grazing nearby, by becoming trapped in their hooves, creating severe problems with their ability to walk.
Production:
It is the large underground storage root, which holds the active ingredients. This root is harvested, sliced, dried for making the tea, or powdered before being made into tablets.
The Devil's claw root is handpicked to guarantee only the best possible raw material is used in this product.
These tablets can also be crushed and applied externally to the skin.
It contains no sugar, starch, flavouring, colouring or preservatives.
Suggested Use:
For use as a digestive aid: one tablet to be swallowed whole with a small amount of liquid, 10 minutes before meals in the morning, at noon, and in the evening.
For use as an anti-inflammatory: one tablet to be swallowed whole with a small amount of liquid between meals 1-3 times daily.
These tablets should be taken for a course of 20 weeks, before taking a break for 4 weeks.

A:The only Drug interaction information I have found regarding Devil's Claw is the following:
"None reported. However, due to protective action of DC against arrhythmias, possible interaction with other anti-arrhythmic agents cannot be excluded"

Q:Are there any contraindications for people with High Blood Pressure? Can it cause an increase in blood pressure?
A:According to the NHPD of Health Canada:
Consult a health care provider prior to use if you have heart disease (Jellin et al. 2003). Consult a health care provider prior to use if using antiarrhythmic medication &/or blood thinners (Jellin et al. 2003). Consult a health care provider prior to use if you are diabetic (Foster 1998; Newall et al. 1996; Jellin et al. 2003). Discontinue if you experience prolonged gastrointestinal discomfort. (ESCOP 1999). Consult a health care provider if symptoms persist after 6 months.
The newest ESCOP (2003) monograph from EU lists the following possible side effects:
Mild gastro-intestinal disturbances (diarrhea, nausea, stomach upset) may occur in sensitive individual at high dosage levels and contraindicated with gastric and duodenal ulcers. There is no special warning or precaution for use or interaction with other medications and other forms of interaction.
There is no warning about high blood pressure listed under the two official sites.
DOSAGE/USAGE:
Q:Why is it necessary to stop taking the Pagosid after eight weeks?
A:First of all, a course of treatment for Pagosid is 20 weeks, not 8 weeks. After 20 weeks, a person should take a 4 week break, and then it may be continued if desired.
Q:Why is it necessary to have the rest in between times?
A:Bitter constituents in Devil's Claw can have side effects on the stomachs of some people. The recommended break should be considered as a preventive measure against this type of upset. If a person has a very sensitive stomach, they may want to reduce the 20 weeks to shorter period of time and/or break for a longer time.
Q:Devil's Claw tea and Pagosid tabs - Can these be used together?
A:I always understood one took one or the other - never both. IF you take both, make sure that you do not overdose
